Beatles – Abbey Road 1978 UK green vinyl LP with black swirls

beatles abbey road green vinyl uk lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition green vinyl pressing of Abbey Road by the Beatles, issued in the UK in 1978.  This copy has black swirls mixed in with the green vinyl.

These green vinyl pressings were made for export only and were not sold in the UK when new.

About this copy: This copy of Abbey Road is a 1978 UK issue on the Apple label.

The cover is M-.  The original white paper inner sleeve is included.

The green vinyl disc, which has black vinyl swirls mixed in with the green vinyl, is M- and may be unplayed..  Clean disc!

A nice variation of a terrific album.

Background: There’s not much to say about Abbey Road that hasn’t already been said; the album reached #1 on the album charts in 7 different countries, and has sold more than 12 million copies in the U.S. alone.

In the late 1970s, collectors were showing a lot of interest in both picture discs and colored vinyl, so record companies worldwide released a number of their popular titles, both old and new, in these formats as limited edition items.

In the UK, four titles by the Beatles were pressed on colored vinyl for export to the United States – Magical Mystery Tour, Let It Be, the White Album, and Abbey Road.  These titles were all available only for a limited time before being deleted, and all four are somewhat hard to find today.

Allmusic.com gave Abbey Road a 5 star review:

In many ways, Abbey Road stands apart from the rest of the Beatles’ catalog, an album that gains considerable strength from its lush, enveloping production — a recording so luxuriant, it glosses over aesthetic differences between the group’s main three songwriters and ties together a series of disconnected unfinished songs into a complete suite. Where Sgt. Pepper pioneered such mind-bending aural techniques, Abbey Road truly seized the possibilities of the studio and, in doing so, pointed the way forward to the album rock era of the 1970s. Many of the studio tricks arrive during that brilliant suite of songs, a sequence that lasts nearly a full side of an album. … While a single song or segment can be dazzling, having a succession of marvelous, occasionally intertwined moments is not only a marvel but indeed a summation of everything that made the Beatles great.

Beatles – Abbey Road sealed 1978 Japan Pro-Use audiophile LP with obi

beatles abbey road japan pro-use lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the limited edition Japanese “Pro-Use” pressing of Abbey Road by the Beatles, including the original obi.

This is possibly the best-sounding version of Abbey Road ever released on vinyl anywhere.

About this copy: This copy of Abbey Road is a 1978 Japanese issue on the Apple label with the “Pro-Use Series” obi.

As the album is still sealed in a loose bag, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact, with no rips, tears, or holes.

A virtually perfect copy of a great-sounding classic LP and the only sealed copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: In 1978, EMI-Toshiba introduced a limited edition audiophile series of albums in Japan.  Most of the titles were classical or Jazz titles by artists who were not well known, but the series also included Abbey Road by the Beatles and The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd.

Both titles offered exceptionally good sound and have long been sought out by audiophiles.

There’s not much to say about Abbey Road that hasn’t already been said; the album reached #1 on the album charts in 7 different countries, and has sold more than 12 million copies in the U.S. alone.

The disc is M- with a single spindle mark on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Beautiful disc!

Beatles – Magical Mystery Tour sealed 1977 or 1981 German true stereo LP

beatles magical mystery tour german lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed German pressing of Magical Mystery Tour by the Beatles, featuring all of the songs in true stereo* as well as a cover that was unique to the German release.

About this copy:  This copy of Magical Mystery Tour is a 1977 or possibly a 1981 German pressing on the Apple label.  This is the scarce later pressing and not the more common early 1970s pressing with the “Hor Zu” logo on the label and cover.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.  As we cannot examine the record, the stamper numbers are unknown and we cannot definitively determine if this is the 1977 pressing or the very similar 1981 pressing, which had an identical cover.  This may or may not be the rare “hot” pressing with A1/B1 stampers, though the cover is identical to copies of that pressing that we’ve had for sale in the past.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips tears, or holes.  There is a tiny corner dent in the upper left hand corner.  It’s more visible from the back; it’s barely noticeable from the front.

An exceptionally copy of a terrific record that has become quite scarce in recent years.

Background:  Released in 1967, Magical Mystery Tour was a collection of songs from the film of the same name combined with some singles that had been released shortly before the album.

In the UK, the material from the film was released as a double EP set, but in Japan, the album was released in the U.S. format.  The album reached #1 in the U.S.  The album was not released in the UK until 1976.

*The album was not released in Germany until 1971; the German release used different master tapes that used true stereo mixes for all the tracks except “I Am the Walrus,” which is true stereo for the first half of the song and artificial stereo for the last half of the song.

Allmusic.com gave Magical Mystery Tour a 5 star review:

The U.S. version of the soundtrack for the Beatles’ ill-fated British television special embellished the six songs that were found on the British Magical Mystery Tour double EP with five other cuts from their 1967 singles. The psychedelic sound is very much in the vein of Sgt. Pepper’s, and even spacier in parts (especially the sound collages of “I Am the Walrus”). Unlike Sgt. Pepper’s, there’s no vague overall conceptual/thematic unity to the material, which has made Magical Mystery Tour suffer slightly in comparison. Still, the music is mostly great.

As Magical Mystery Tour was a soundtrack to a film that contained only six new songs, EMI Records in Britain decided to release the material as a set of two 7″ EPs.  In the U.S., Capitol Records issued the material as a full album, by combining A and B sides of then-current singles.  As there were no true stereo mixes of those singles at the time, most of the second side of the album was issued in the United States in Capitol’s “Duophonic” fake stereo.

In the early 1970s, true stereo mixes of those songs became available, and Apple Records released the full LP in Germany using those stereo mixes.  On this version, the entire album was in true stereo with the exception of the second half of “I Am the Walrus,” for which no true stereo mix exists.

The German album was also issued with a unique cover, though without the gatefold cover and book that accompanied the U.S. album and the UK EP release.

Most of the German copies of Magical Mystery Tour  that we’ve seen over the years were sold through Hörzu, a German television listings magazine.  These copies have the Hörzu logo on both the cover and record label, and seem to be more common than those purchased elsewhere.

Beatles – Abbey Road 1978 UK green vinyl LP

beatles abbey road green vinyl uk lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition green vinyl pressing of Abbey Road by the Beatles, issued in the UK in 1978.

These green vinyl pressings were made for export only and were not sold in the UK when new.

About this copy: This copy of Abbey Road is a 1978 UK issue on the Apple label.

The cover is VG++ with trace edge wear.  The top edge looks “dirty;” this is due to aging adhesive used on the cover and is common on this LP.  The original white inner sleeve is VG+ with a name and date written on it in ballpoint pen.

The disc is VG+, with a few very light hairlines and a number of spindle marks on the labels.  It’s a clean disc that has been well cared for.

A nice copy of a terrific album.

Background: There’s not much to say about Abbey Road that hasn’t already been said; the album reached #1 on the album charts in 7 different countries, and has sold more than 12 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Beatles – Abbey Road 1969 Japan red vinyl LP with obi

beatles abbey road japan red vinyl lp

Offered for sale is an original red vinyl Japanese pressing of Abbey Road by the Beatles, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Abbey Road is a 1969 Japanese pressing on the Apple label, pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl and including the nearly-always-missing original die-cut “medallion” obi.

The cover is VG++, with slight edge and corner wear.

The original obi is VG++, with slight foxing.  There are no tears.   The “hojyuhyo”, or reorder tag is still attached.

The original black inner sleeve is M- with no splits.  The lyric insert is VG+ with slight foxing, but no tears.

The red vinyl disc is VG++ with a few spindle marks on the labels and a couple of light scuffs on side one.  Side two has a light inaudible mark through the second track.  It’s a clean disc that has been well cared for.

A nice copy of an album that’s hard to find complete.

Background: There’s not much to say about Abbey Road that hasn’t already been said; the album reached #1 on the album charts in 7 different countries, and has sold more than 12 million copies in the U.S. alone.

As with every other album by the Beatles that was released in Japan in the 1960s, original pressings of Abbey Road were pressed on red “Everclean” vinyl, a compound that was created with hopes that the vinyl would be less prone to static electricity than the standard black vinyl of the day.

Some Beatles LPs were issued multiple times on red vinyl in Japan; A Hard Day’s Night, for instance, was released four times in the 1960s on red vinyl, and each pressing had a different obi on the cover.

Abbey Road, on the other hand, was only pressed on red vinyl one time, for the original release and those copies were only available for a few months before the record company changed the pressings to black vinyl.

Beatles – Abbey Road 1978 Japan picture disc LP with obi

Beatles - Abbey Road Japan picture disc LP

Offered for sale is a scarce Japanese picture disc issue of the Beatles’ Abbey Road LP, including the original obi.

The Japanese pressings of this picture disc are much rarer than the American pressing.

About this copy: This copy of Abbey Road is an original 1978 Japanese issue on the Apple label.

The cover is M-  The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is M-.

The disc is M- and may be unplayed.  There is some “haze” on the vinyl on side one; this may be a manufacturing issue.  The disc plays well.

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP..

Background: During the picture disc craze of the late 1970s, two Beatles LPs were officially released in that format – Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road.  Capitol overpressed the Sgt. Pepper LP in the United States, and it became difficult to sell.  As a result, the later release of Abbey Road. sold in significantly fewer numbers, as many retailers didn’t bother to stock it, fearing that they would be stuck with them.

Both titles were also released in Japan, and the Japanese pressings are much harder to find than their American counterparts, particularly so for Abbey Road.

Allmusic.com gave Abbey Road a 5 star review:

Beatles – Sgt. Pepper Japan picture disc LP with obi

beatles sgt. pepper japan picture disc LP

Offered for sale is a limited edition Japanese picture disc pressing of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Sgt. Pepper is a 1978 Japanese pressing on the Capitol label.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is VG++ on side one with a tiny hairline at the beginning of the third track.  Side two is M-.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of a picture disc that’s quite hard to find complete.

Background: Due to collector interest in picture discs, which were then mostly promotional items, many record companies started issuing limited edition picture discs of popular albums in 1978.

The large-scale production of picture disc LPs was short-lived, as most buyers weren’t interested in paying nearly twice as much money for records that usually didn’t sound as good as the regular black vinyl pressings.

During this time, the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road, and Band on the Run by Paul McCartney & Wings were released as picture discs in both the U.S. and Japan.

The Japanese pressings are much harder to find than the American versions.

Allmusic.com gave Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band a 5 star review:

With Revolver, the Beatles made the Great Leap Forward, reaching a previously unheard-of level of sophistication and fearless experimentation. Sgt. Pepper, in many ways, refines that breakthrough, as the Beatles consciously synthesized such disparate influences as psychedelia, art-song, classical music, rock & roll, and music hall, often in the course of one song. Not once does the diversity seem forced — the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian “When I’m 64” seems like a logical extension of “Within You Without You” and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of “Lovely Rita.”… It’s possible to argue that there are better Beatles albums, yet no album is as historically important as this. After Sgt. Pepper, there were no rules to follow — rock and pop bands could try anything, for better or worse. Ironically, few tried to achieve the sweeping, all-encompassing embrace of music as the Beatles did here.
