Jerry Cole/Dick Dale – Surf Age/Summer Surf set of two sealed U.S. stereo LPs with bonus singles

Offered for sale is a pair of two rare still sealed stereo surf LPs:

  • Surf Age by Jerry Cole and His Spacemen
  • Summer Surf by Dick Dale and His Del-Tones

Both LPs are the rare stereo versions.  Both LPs are still sealed.  Each LP includes a rare bonus single that promotes two tracks from the other artist’s album.

These two albums were released at the same time by Capitol Records and have consecutive catalog numbers (ST-2111/ST-2112.)

About Jerry Cole’s Surf Age: This copy of Surf Age is an original 1964 U.S. pressing on the Capitol label.  This LP includes the bonus single “Spanish Kiss”/”Thunder Wave” by Dick Dale and His Del-Tones.

As the album is still sealed, the record (and bonus single) are presumably unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes, aside from the breathe holes in the wrap.  A price sticker (not shown) is still attached to the shrink wrap.

There are two tiny corner dents, but aside from that, this LP is nearly perfect.

A beautiful copy of a a terrific surf LP that almost never turns up complete.

About Dick Dale’s Summer Surf: This copy of Summer Surf is an original 1964 U.S. pressing on the Capitol label.  This LP includes the bonus single “Racing Waves”/”Movin’ Surf” by Jerry Cole and His Spacemen.

As the album is still sealed, the record (and bonus single) are presumably unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes, aside from a tiny pinhole in the lower right hand corner.

A beautiful copy of a a terrific surf LP that almost never turns up complete.

Background (Surf Age): Released in 1964, Surf Age was one of the few albums by Jerry Cole that actually had his name on the cover.  Cole was a member of the Wrecking Crew, a group of session musicians that performed on hundreds of albums by a variety of artists in the 1960s, and when Cole wasn’t doing that, he was recording several dozen albums of his own (under a variety of names) as well as appearing as a member of the house band on the 1964-1965 U.S. TV series Shindig.

Allmusic.com gave Surf Age a 3 1/2 star review:

Jerry Cole was a first-rank studio guitarist who, like many members of the Wrecking Crew, cut a few instrumental albums under his own name during the 1960s when he wasn’t busy playing hot licks on other folks’ records. … this is a blowing session where a bunch of talented studio cats have some fun knocking out rock & roll that’s polished and frantic at the same time, and on that score, this album delivers the goods. Cole’s guitar work lacks the feral intensity of Dick Dale, but he’s an agile picker and his tone choices are excellent, ranging from the bright cleanliness of the title track to the reverb-soaked “Deep Surf” and the raunchy fuzz on “One Color Blues.” And this album is a testament to the effortless skill and enthusiasm of the great Los Angeles session players of the ’60s, who could knock out records this good as easily as some kid at McDonald’s flips a hamburger. If you dig vintage surf sounds or classic-era instrumental rock, then Surf Age is right up your alley.

Background (Summer Surf): Released in 1964, Summer Surf was the fifth album by Dick Dale and his final LP with the Del-Tones.

Allmusic.com gave Summer Surf a 3 1/2 star review:

On his fourth album for Capitol Records, 1964’s Summer Surf, Dick Dale seemed to be aiming for a glossier and more elaborate sound, and the production shows the occasional influences of Phil Spector and Brian Wilson, then the reigning titans of West Coast studiocraft. With banks of vocal choruses on several tunes, additional percussion fancying up the arrangements, and no fear of horns and keyboards, Summer Surf was the most polished Dick Dale set to date, and on tunes like the Spanish guitar exercise “Spanish Kiss” and the Hebrew-flavored “The Star (Of David),” Dale’s ambitions paid off — although not exactly rock & roll, they are compelling and absorbing instrumentals that find the guitarist expanding his boundaries.

Background on this set: In 1964, Capitol Records came up with the clever idea of releasing four surf albums by four different artists and having each album include a bonus single from one of the other three albums in order to cross-promote sales.

These albums had covers that were designed to store the single in a pocket on the front side that also displayed the title of the 45.

The Surf Age LP included the single “Spanish Kiss”/”Thunder Wave” by Dick Dale

Summer Surf  by Dick Dale included “Racing Waves”/”Movin’ Surf” by Jerry Cole

Surf Route 101 by The Super Stocks included the single “Doin’ the Surfink”/”Finksville U.S.A” by Mr. Gasser & the Weirdos

Surfink! by Mr. Gasser & the Weirdos included the single “Santa Barbara”/”Midnight Run” by the Super Stocks.

None of the four albums sold well and all are hard to find today with the bonus singles intact.

You can listen to Jerry Cole’s “Racing Waves” here:

You can listen to Dick Dale’s “Thunder Wave” here:

Pink Floyd – Delicate Sound of Thunder sealed 1988 U.S. 2 LP set

pink floyd - delicate sound of thunder u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. pressing of the double album Delicate Sound of Thunder by Pink Floyd.

About this copy: This copy of Delicate Sound of Thunder is an original 1988 U.S. pressing on the Columbia label.

As the album is sealed, the records are presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips or tears.  There is a clean punch hole in the upper left hand corner; this looks more like a promotional hole than a cutout mark.

A nice copy of an album that is surprisingly hard to find as a U.S. pressing.

Background: Released in 1988, Delicate Sound of Thunder was the first full live album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #11 on both the U.S. and UK album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Delicate Sound of Thunder a 2 1/2 star review:

In one respect, it’s hard to fault David Gilmour for retooling Pink Floyd as a neo-oldies act with Momentary Lapse of Reason, since Roger Waters took the band over the brink with his obsessive, nonmusical The Final Cut. Fans were eager for an album that sounded like classic Floyd, which is what Momentary Lapse was. But what they really thirsted for was a live spectacle from Floyd, where they could hear the old tunes and see all the old stunts. That’s what they got on the 1987/1988 Pink Floyd world tour, which is documented on the double-disc set The Delicate Sound of Thunder.

Beatles – A Hard Day’s Night sealed stereo1964 LP

beatles - a hard day's night sealed u.s. stereo lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed stereo early pressing of the Beatles soundtrack to A Hard Day’s Night, issued in 1964 with the unplayed record still sealed in the plastic inner sleeve.

Stereo first pressings are actually rarer than mono issues, as most people who bought the album when it was first released bought it in mono.

About this copy: This copy of A Hard Day’s Night is an unplayed original 1964 U.S. stereo first pressing on the black United Artists label.

The back cover has three lines of publishing credit (this was later corrected to four.)  The cover and label correctly list “Tell Me Why,” but “I’ll Cry Instead” is listed as “I Cry Instead.”

The cover is VG+, with slight corner wear and some foxing on the back cover.

While the cover has been opened, the record is still sealed in the original plastic inner sleeveThe record has never been opened or played.

A beautiful example of a terrific album.

Background: When the Beatles starred in their first film, A Hard Day’s Night, two different albums were released worldwide to coincide with the release of the film.  In most of the world, a Beatles album bearing the title of the film was released, containing the eight songs from the film along with six others.  This album was released by the Beatles record label, Parlophone.

In the United States, the soundtrack rights went to the film’s producer and distributor, United Artists.  Because they had rights to only the eight songs in the film and not the additional six songs, they included four instrumental tracks by the George Martin Orchestra that had also appeared in the film to fill out the album’s running time.

Unlike the UK LP, which was essentially a new Beatles album, the American A Hard Day’s Night album was a true film soundtrack, and the album was issued in both stereo and mono.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. album chart and remained there for 14 weeks.

Pretty Things – Pretty Things sealed 2010 U.S. Sundazed colored vinyl LP

pretty things - pretty things colored vinyl sundazed lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed, limited edition colored vinyl mono pressing of the first album by the Pretty Things, released in 2010 by Sundazed Records.

About this copy: This copy of Pretty Things is a limited edition colored vinyl pressing on the Sundazed label.

The album is still sealed and is presumed to be mint and unplayed. The shrinkwrap is tight with no tears or rips and has two stickers – a hype sticker for Sundazed vinyl and a sticker that reads “Sundazed Colored Vinyl.”

Sundazed did two pressings when they reissued the first album (U.S. version) by the Pretty Things in 2010. Most copies were pressed on black vinyl, but 200 copies were pressed on colored vinyl, which we believe to be brown.

All copies of this LP are now out of print and we haven’t seen a colored vinyl copy of this for sale in years.

Background: Released in 1965, Pretty Things was the debut LP by the band of the same name.  The album reached #6 on the UK charts, but did not chart in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Pretty Things a four star review:

The Pretty Things’ debut LP was a legendary exercise in anarchy — 30 minutes into the two days’ worth of sessions, their original producer, Jack Baverstock (the head of the label, no less), walked out, and was eventually replaced by a slightly more sympathetic personality in the hopes of salvaging something from the efforts of the band, who, whatever their shortcomings in decorum or sobriety, were on their third successive charting single. The resulting album, made under the coordination (if not control) of drummer-turned-producer Bobby Graham, made the early work of the Rolling Stones — rivals and one-time bandmates to the Pretty Things’ Dick Taylor — sound more like the work of the Beatles: very calculated, lightweight, and…genteel. .. Phil May reveals himself as a fairly powerful singer, though lacking some of the charisma that Mick Jagger projected, but the group’s own raw power made for quirky appeal all of its own that would carry them for many years beyond this roaring start. And in the meantime, records like this would point the way not only toward the work of such American garage band icons as the MC5, but blast a path through the wilderness that the likes of Billy Childish and his band the Milkshakes and their successors would traverse.

Jimi Hendrix / Otis Redding – Monterry Pop Festival sealed withdrawn U.S. 1970 LP

jimmy hendrix/otis redding - monerey pop festival lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the 1970 Jimi Hendrix/Otis Redding LP Monterey International Pop Festival featuring the original withdrawn cover.

This cover was withdrawn shortly after release due to legal action by the owners of the Monterey Festival for unauthorized use of their artwork and was replaced by a cover with photos of Hendrix and Redding and retitled as Historic Performances Recorded at the Monterey International Pop Festival.

About this copy: This copy of Monterey International Pop Festival is an original, still sealed copy featuring the original withdrawn cover with artwork used to promote the Monterey Pop Festival.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears or holes.  There is a rivet punched through the upper left hand corner of the cover, indicating that this album was sold as a cutout.

A beautiful copy of a terrific album.

Background: In mid-1970, Reprise Records was getting a bit impatient with Jimi Hendrix, as they hadn’t received a new album from him in quite a while and they were eager to release something new.

With no new Hendrix album in hand, Reprise released an album of material from the Monterey International Pop Festival, recorded in June of 1967, featuring Jimi Hendrix on one side and Otis Redding on the other.

The timing was perfect from a sales perspective; the album hit the store shelves just three weeks before Jimi’s untimely death and reached #15 on the charts.

The original cover art featured artwork from the posters used to promote the Monterey International Pop Festival. Due to legal threats from the promoters of the festival, this cover was withdrawn shortly after release and replaced with another one that featured multiple photos of Hendrix and Redding. (see photos for example)

Allmusic.com gave Monterey International Pop Festival a 3 star review:

This odd LP was one of three releases from the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival that actually made it out to the public within a few years of the actual event (the others were the Mamas & the Papas live album, and Ravi Shankar’s material). At the time, it made a lot of sense, in that both Otis Redding and Jimi Hendrix had passed on, consequently any concert recordings by either were that much more valuable — but as Otis had not done a long enough set to fill up an LP, he ended up sharing this post-humous release with Hendrix. … Hendrix was probably more widely listened to, and was better known among the college students who bought most rock LPs. But in terms of musical importance, the Otis Redding side now seems far and away the greater moment, as he was gone barely six months after this performance, whereas Hendrix had three years of life and performances ahead of him.

Donna Loren – Beach Blanket Bingo sealed U.S. stereo LP

donna loren - beach blanket bingo lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed stereo copy of Beach Blanket Bingo, the only album by singer/actress/model Donna Loren.

About this copy: This copy of Beach Blanket Bingo is an original 1965 stereo pressing on the Capitol label.  As the album is sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

This copy is pristine and the wrap is fully intact with no tears or rips.  There is a punch hole in the upper left hand corner and a tiny corner dent in the lower right hand corner.

A beautiful copy of a surprisingly rare LP and the only copy we’ve ever seen or had for sale.

Background: For someone with a relatively high profile in the 1960s, Donna Loren had a surprisingly short recording career.  She spent five years as the “Dr. Pepper Girl,” appeared in four “beach party” movies, and appeared as a singer in 30 episodes of the popular Shindig TV show.

Despite all of this, she only released five singles and a single LP, Beach Blanket Bingo, an album that collected songs from her beach movies into a single LP.  The album did not chart.

Frank Sinatra – The Voice sealed Columbia 6 eye mono LP

frank sinatra- the voice columbia lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed original mono pressing of The Voice by Frank Sinatra, with the record still sealed in the plastic inner sleeve.

About this copy: This copy of The Voice is an original 1955 mono pressing on the Columbia “6 eye” label.

As the record is still sealed in the plastic inner sleeve, the disc is presumably new and unplayed.

The cover is VG++, with trace wear at the edges.  The back cover has a couple of what appear to be staple holes.

The deep groove disc is still sealed in the inner sleeve and the perforated closure is still fully intact.

Matrix numbers are:

XLP36511-2AK

XLP36512-2B

A beautiful copy of a classic Sinatra LP and likely to be your final upgrade.

Background: By 1955, Frank Sinatra had left Columbia Records and was starting to see success at Capitol.  Columbia took advantage of that success and reissued material that Sinatra had recorded in the late 1940s and early 1950s for the label; The Voice was probably the best and most critically-acclaimed of those albums.

Allmusic.com gave The Voice a 4 star review:

Most of the Sinatra recordings available during the 1950s consisted of his contemporary work for Capitol Records. But every so often his former label, Columbia Records, would get something together on LP from among his ’40s and early-’50s sides. The Voice was one of a handful of ’50s long-players showcasing the first phase of Sinatra’s solo career, and at the time it wowed listeners — the focus is on the ballads, and the dozen represented here constitute a bumper crop of classics, all resplendent in the singer’s richest, most overpowering intonation and most delicately nuanced work. … The Columbia material tended to get neglected, both in the marketplace and most listeners’ minds, as his career extended over the decades, but hearing The Voice anew is a reminder of just how overpowering Sinatra’s sound could be, even in the early phase of his solo work.

Jimi Hendrix – Broadcasts/Maui sealed 1973 U.S. colored vinyl Trademark of Quality 2 LP set

jimi hendrix - maui/broadcasts tmoq lp

Offered for sale is a rare still sealed colored vinyl copy of the 2 LP live album Broadcasts/Maui, by Jimi Hendrix, released by the Trademark of Quality label.

About this copy: This copy of Broadcasts/Maui is a later TMOQ pressing, with “COLORED VINYL” printed on the included insert.

As the album is still sealed, the records are presumably new and unplayed.

The shrink wrap is fully intact except for a tiny break in the lower right hand corner.   The original insert is included, and is M-.  An original price sticker is attached to the shrink wrap (not shown in photo.)

As the album is still sealed, the color of the vinyl is unknownWe’re aware of copies pressed in red, blue, yellow, and green.  Other colors may exist.

Label variation is unknown.  These discs may have TMOQ “sideways pig” labels or they may have no labels at all.

A beautiful copy of a rare Hendrix live LP and one that is almost impossible to find sealed.

This will likely be your final upgrade.

Background: Released in July, 1973, Broadcasts/Maui was part of a short-lived “budget” series by the Trademark of Quality label that packaged together two separate albums that had previously been released individually.

As these titles had all been previously released, sales were relatively poor and the series was discontinued after a brief time.

John’s Children – Orgasm sealed 1970 U.S. psych LP

john's children - orgasm u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed original U.S. pressing of Orgasm, the only LP ever released by John’s Children.

About this copy: This copy of Orgasm is a still sealed 1970 U.S. pressing on the White Whale label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

While the album is still sealed, there is a 7″ break in the wrap at the mouth of the cover.  We’ve secured it with tape to prevent it from opening further.

There is a small 1/2″ tear in the wrap at the lower left hand corner, and a 1″ break and a slight cover split in the center of the bottom edge.

This cover does not have cutout marks of any sort – no saw marks, cut corners or drill holes.

A still sealed example of an impossibly rare LP, and the only copy (in any condition!) that we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: John’s Children barely attracted attention in the musical world during their brief 1966-1969 career.  They’re best known today for being the band that Marc Bolan was in before forming Tyrannosaurus Rex, and for their only LP, Orgasm, which was released in 1970.

The album was actually recorded in 1967, but the release was delayed, reportedly at the insistence of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  That’s likely untrue, but the world was likely not ready for an album called Orgasm in 1967.

Marc Bolan did not perform on the LP.

The album is an odd one; it’s a studio recording with live audience sounds overdubbed on it (reportedly taken from the film, A Hard Day’s Night) to give the impression that it was recorded live.

As the band had already broken up by the time the album was finally released, sales were minimal and the album was quickly deleted.

George Harrison – Electronic Sound sealed 1969 U.S. Apple LP

george harrison - electronic sound u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. pressing of Electronic Sound by George Harrison.

About this copy: This copy of Electronic Sound is a sealed original U.S. issue on the Zapple label.

As the album is sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for a 2″ break on the bottom edge, where the cover is just beginning to split.

A nice copy of a scarce Beatles-related LP and the first sealed copy we’ve had for sale in decades.

Background: Electronic Sound is an acquired taste; it’s the result of Harrison fooling around with a Moog synthesizer with the help of Bernie Krause and the results are rather interesting.

The LP was issued on the Beatles’ short-lived Zapple Records label, which was intended to provide an outlet for more avant garde recordings. The label only issued two records, this one and John and Yoko’s Life With the Lions before being shut down by the Beatles’ then-manager, Allen Klein.

Allmusic.com gave Electronic Sound a 4 star review:

Hard as it is to believe, George Harrison, guitar picker, was also an electronic music pioneer, as these two lengthy, abstract tone poems for early-vintage Moog synthesizer reveal. A naif in the electronic sphere, George had a lot of help putting this music together, particularly from ace California electronic composer Bernie Krause. …Though scoffed at when they were released, these pieces can hold their own and then some with many of those of other, more seriously regarded electronic composers. And when you consider that synthesizers were only capable of playing one note at a time and sounds could not be stored or recalled with the push of a button, the achievement becomes even more remarkable. Alas, George never followed up on this direction, which, like the Zapple label, was abandoned after this release.
