New Christy Minstrels – Tall Tales! 1963 U.S. stereo red vinyl promotional LP

New Christy Minstrels - Tall Tales! u.s. red vinyl lp

Offered for sale is an original U.S. stereo red vinyl promotional copy of Tall Tales! Legends and Nonsense by the New Christy Minstrels.

This album was issued on red vinyl both mono and stereo; the stereo version is quite rare.

About this copy: This copy of Tall Tales! Legends and Nonsense is a 1963 U.S. stereo pressing on the Columbia label.

The cover is VG, with quite a bit of edge wear, especially on the spine.  There is a sticker on the back cover that says “For Demonstration Use Only – Not for Sale.”

The red vinyl disc is VG+ with a couple of light marks on each side.  There are a few spindle marks on the labels.

It’s a fairly clean disc that plays well, and is the only red vinyl copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: Released in 1963, Tall Tales! Legends and Nonsense was the third album by the New Christy Minstrels, a group that at various times had Barry McGuire (on this LP), Kim Carnes, Gene Clark, and Kenny Rogers as members.

Allmusic.com gave Tall Tales! Legends and Nonsense a 4 1/2 star review:

By the time that the acoustic folk collective known as the New Christy Minstrels released their third long-player, Tall Tales! Legends and Nonsense (1963), the band had been together under the direction of Randy Sparks in several different configurations for less than a year. During that time, however, they had established themselves as a formidable aggregate of collective musicianship. Their multi-faceted talents were likewise prominently featured during the first season of the highly rated weekly network musical/variety Andy Williams Show. Their slightly offbeat brand of innocuous and infectious folky fun is at the heart of this release.

Dan Gurney – Dan Gurney and His World of Racing sealed 1965 Mobile Fidelity LP

Dan Gurney - Dan Gurney and His World of Racing u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. copy of Dan Gurney and His World of Racing released by Mobile Fidelity.

About this copy: This copy of Dan Gurney and His World of Racing is a 1965 U.S. stereo pressing on the Mobile Fidelity label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for a couple of very tiny breaks at the right hand corners.

A beautiful copy of a rare Mobile Fidelity LP.

Background: Before they started pressing high-quality rock, jazz, and classical LPs in the late 1970s, Mobile Fidelity made sound effects records.

Most of their early efforts concentrated on recordings of steam locomotives, but they did do a few other titles, such as this one, which featured interviews and recordings of U.S. race car driver Dan Gurney.

While the album says that it’s a stereo LP that is compatible with mono, it actually wasn’t, and copies that were played on mono players are usually in terrible condition due to groove damage.

Jimmy Clanton – Happy/Blue 1960 Ace red/blue vinyl 2 LP with poster and letter

jimmy clanton - jimmy's happy/jimmy's blue u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a copy of the double album Jimmy’s Happy/Jimmy’s Blue by Jimmy Clanton, with one red vinyl disc, one blue vinyl disc, the rare poster and nearly-always-missing fan club letter.

These two LPs were sold as individual albums (Ace LP 1007 and LP 1008) and as a double album (Ace DLP 100); the colored vinyl pressings were available only via mail through the Jimmy Clanton fan club and were not sold in stores.

About these copies: This copy of Jimmy’s Happy/Jimmy’s Blue is a 1960 U.S. mono pressing on the Ace label.  All copies are mono; there was no stereo issue.

The gatefold cover is VG++, with a couple of tiny corner dents and slight foxing on the inside.  The poster is still attached to the inside of the cover and is M-.

The rare fan club letter is M-; this letter thanks the buyer for purchasing the double album and tells them that they can get an autographed photo of Jimmy Clanton by sending 25¢ to the address noted in the letter.

The red vinyl Jimmy’s Happy disc is M-, and may be unplayed.
The blue vinyl Jimmy’s Blue disc is VG++ on side one with a couple of faint marks.  Side two is M-.

A beautiful copy of a rare double album and the only copy we’ve ever seen that included the letter.

They’re pretty good records, too.

Background: Jimmy Clanton was a pop singer and songwriter from the small town of Cut Off, Louisiana.  He had 7 Top 40 hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including “Just a Dream” and “Venus in Blue Jeans.”

He recorded for Jackson, Mississippi-based Ace Records and his records weren’t heavily promoted, as the label’s more popular artists performed R&B and Jimmy was more of the white teen idol type.

You can listen to “You’re Just in Love” here:

These two albums from 1960 were briefly available on colored vinyl, with Jimmy’s Happy pressed on red vinyl and Jimmy’s Blue pressed on blue vinyl.

The colored vinyl copies of these two albums were only available by mail order to members of the Jimmy Clanton fan club, and all of the copies sent to stores were pressed on black vinyl. Reportedly, only a few hundred copies of each were pressed on colored vinyl, and we know of no other colored vinyl albums on the Ace Label.

These two albums were also issued as a two record set (DLP 100), and again, some copies of that set were pressed with red and blue discs.  As both the individual albums and the double album were pressed at the same time, the labels for the individual albums have both their own catalog number (LP 1007 and LP 1008) and the catalog number of the double album (DLP 100.)  The colored vinyl pressings appear to be more common in the two record set than they are with the individual albums.

Miles Davis – Bags’ Groove Japan LP with obi

Offered for sale is a Japanese copy of Bags’ Groove by Miles Davis, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Bags’ Groove is a 1984 Japanese pressing  on the Prestige label of an LP that was originally released in 1957:

The cover is VG+ with slight corner wear and moderate foxing on the back cover.  The obi is VG+ with light foxing.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- on side one and VG++ on side two, with two light inaudible marks.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific LP.

Background: The 1957 release Bags’ Groove is billed as a Miles Davis album, but it features an all-star cast.

Besides Davis, the band includes:

  • Sonny Rollins
  • Milt Jackson
  • Thelonious Monk
  • Horace Silver
  • Percy Heath
  • Kenny Clarke

Allmusic.com gave Bags’ Groove a 5 star review:

There are a multitude of reasons why Bags’ Groove remains a cornerstone of the post-bop genre. Of course there will always be the lure of the urban myth surrounding the Christmas Eve 1954 session — featuring Thelonious Monk — which is documented on the two takes of the title track. There are obviously more tangible elements, such as Davis’ practically telepathic runs with Sonny Rollins (tenor sax). Or Horace Silver’s (piano) uncanny ability to provide a stream of chord progressions that supply a second inconspicuous lead without ever overpowering. Indeed, Davis’ choice of former Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra and concurrent Modern Jazz Quartet members Milt Jackson (vibes), Kenny Clarke (drums), and Percy Heath (bass) is obviously well-informed. …Bags’ Groove belongs as a cornerstone of all jazz collections.

Miles Davis – Cookin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet Japan LP with obi

Miles Davis - Cookin' With the Miles Davis Quintet Japan LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Cookin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet by Miles Davis, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Cookin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet is a 1976 Japanese issue of an LP that was originally released in 1957.

The cover is VG++ with light foxing.  The obi is M-.  The insert is VG++ with slight discoloration.

The disc is M- and looks as though it’s only been played a couple of times.

A beautiful copy of one of many classic Miles Davis LPs.

Background: Released in 1957, Cookin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet was the first of four albums that resulted from the same recording session.

Allmusic.com gave Cookin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet a 4 1/2 star review:

The bounty of material in the band’s live sets — as well as the overwhelming conviction in the quintet’s studio sides — would produce the lion’s share of the Cookin’, Relaxin’, Workin’, and Steamin’ albums. As these recordings demonstrate, there is an undeniable telepathic cohesion that allows this band — consisting of Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums) — to work so efficiently both on the stage and the studio. This same unifying force is also undoubtedly responsible for the extrasensory dimensions scattered throughout these recordings.

Ray Charles/Milt Jackson – Soul Brothers original 1958 stereo LP

Ray Charles/Milt Jackson - Soul Brothers u.s. lp

Offered for sale is an original U.S. stereo pressing of Soul Brothers by Ray Charles and Milt Jackson, on the rare green Atlantic label.

About this copy: This copy is a 1958  U.S. stereo pressing on the all-green Atlantic label that was used only from 1958 to 1960.

The cover is VG+ , with slight general wear.  As with most early stereo Atlantic LPs, this copy has a mono cover with an embossed “STEREO DISC” stamp in gold on the front cover.

The green label stereo disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  There’s a tiny tear on the side one label.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific instrumental LP and only the second copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background:  Soul Brothers is an oddity in the Ray Charles catalog.  It’s one of his few early collaborations, it’s an all-instrumental LP, and it’s one of the rare albums where he plays saxophone.  In this outing, he’s paired up with vibe player Milt Jackson from the Modern Jazz Quartet, though Jackson also plays guitar.

It’s a great record, and one that tends to get overlooked in the long discographies of both Charles and Jackson.

AllMusic.com gave Soul Brothers 4 1/2 stars:

This one is a real historical curiosity. Not only does vibraphonist Milt Jackson double here on piano but he plays guitar (for the only time on record) during “Bags’ Guitar Blues.” In addition Ray Charles is heard in a purely instrumental role on piano and, during two songs, on alto sax. Charles’s fine playing makes one wonder why he so rarely picked up the horn in later years. Billy Mitchell contributes some fine tenor solos on this boppish/blues material and guitarist Skeeter Best, bassist Oscar Pettiford and (MJQ) drummer Connie Kay offer stellar support.

Miles Davis – Relaxin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet Japan LP with obi

Miles Davis - Relaxin' With the Miles Davis Quintet Japan LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese copy of Relaxin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet by Miles Davis, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Relaxin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet is a 1976 Japanese issue of an LP that was originally released in 1958.

The cover is VG+, with no wear, but with moderate foxing.  The obi is VG+, with slight foxing.   The insert is VG++ with slight discoloration.

The disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of one of Miles Davis’ better LPs.

Background: Recorded in 1956 but not released until 1958, Relaxin’ is considered to be one of the best recorded examples of hard bop.

Allmusic.com gave Relaxin’ a 5 star review:

Relaxin’ features the Miles Davis Quintet in a pair of legendary recording dates — from May and October of 1956 — which would generate enough music to produce four separate long-players: Cookin’, Relaxin’, Workin’, and Steamin’. Each of these is considered not only to be among the pinnacle of Davis’ work, but of the entire bop subgenre as well. As with the other titles, Relaxin’ contains a variety of material which the band had concurrently been performing in their concert appearances. In a brilliant stroke of time conservation, the scheme was hatched for the quintet — who includes: Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Philly Joe Jones (drums), and Red Garland (piano) — to perform the equivalent of their live repertoire in the studio for eventual release. … Relaxin’ offers something for every degree of jazz enthusiast. Likewise, the quintet’s recordings provide a tremendous introduction for the curious jazz consumer.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Japan half speed mastered Mastersound LP with obi

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Japan mastersound LP

Offered for sale is a limited edition half speed mastered Japanese pressing of Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, including the original obi, postcard, and poster.

About this copy: This copy of Wish You Were Here  is a 1980 pressing on the CBS/Sony label.

The cover is VG++ and very close to M-, with trace general wear.  The obi is M-.

Also included:

Record company postcard is M-.
Generic Mastersound inner sleeve is M-.
Lyric insert is M-.
Custom inner sleeve is VG+ with no wear or splits, but with moderate foxing.

The poster, Mono Lake postcard and generic Mastersound catalog are missing.

The disc is VG+ on side one, with a couple of light marks through “Welcome to the Machine.”  They’re not deep, but the track does play with slight surface noise.  Side two is M-.

A nice copy of a very rare Pink Floyd LP.

Background:

Columbia Records had a short-lived series of audiophile pressings in the early 1980s that they called their Mastersound series.

These were high-quality pressings mastered with extra care and pressed on premium quality vinyl, and sold at a premium price.

Probably 90% of the records issued in that series in the United States were half speed mastered, while the remainder were digitally mastered.   Most of the digitally mastered titles were of classical music.

That wasn’t the case with the Japanese Mastersound series, however.  Nearly all of the titles in the CBS Mastersound series from Japan were digitally remastered, and most of them don’t sound as good as their analog Japanese counterparts.

In fact, there were only five pop/rock titles in the Japanese series that were half speed mastered:

  • Billy Joel – The Stranger (first issue only; second issue was digitally remastered)
  • Earth, Wind & Fire – Greatest Hits
  • Electric Light Orchestra – Discovery
  • Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here
  • Boz Scaggs – Silk Degrees

All are quite rare, and all sound great.  The Pink Floyd is easily the rarest of the five titles.

Released in 1975, Wish You Were Here was the ninth studio album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the charts in the U.S. and the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Wish You Were Here a 5 star review:

Pink Floyd followed the commercial breakthrough of Dark Side of the Moon with Wish You Were Here, a loose concept album about and dedicated to their founding member Syd Barrett. The record unfolds gradually, as the jazzy textures of “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” reveal its melodic motif, and in its leisurely pace, the album shows itself to be a warmer record than its predecessor. Musically, it’s arguably even more impressive, showcasing the group’s interplay and David Gilmour’s solos in particular. And while it’s short on actual songs, the long, winding soundscapes are constantly enthralling.
