Led Zeppelin – IV 1979 10th Anniversary Japan LP with obi

led zeppelin iv 1979 japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of Led Zeppelin’s untitled fourth album, also known as Led Zeppelin IV, complete with original obi.

This limited edition 1979 release was issued to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the release of the band’s first album.

About this copy: This copy of Led Zeppelin IV is a 1979 Japanese pressing on the Atlantic label of an album that was originally released in 1971.

It includes the original obi, lyric insert, and custom inner sleeve that contained the lyrics to “Stairway to Heaven.”

The cover is VG++ with no wear, but with slight foxing on the back cover.  The obi is VG++ with slight foxing on the back, but no tears.

The lyric insert is M-.  The custom inner sleeve is M-.  The Warner-Pioneer catalog sheet is M-.

The disc is VG++ and close to M-.  There are a few spindle marks on the labels, and a faint inaudible mark through “Black Dog.”  It’s a very clean disc that has only been played a few times.

A nice copy of a terrific record.

Background: I’m not sure how much we need to elaborate about Led Zeppelin IV.   The album, which included “Black Dog,” “Rock and Roll,” and “Stairway to Heaven,” reached #1 on the UK charts and #2 on the U.S. charts, where it has since sold more than 23 million copies.

Allmusic.com gave Led Zeppelin IV a 5 star review:

Encompassing heavy metal, folk, pure rock & roll, and blues, Led Zeppelin’s untitled fourth album is a monolithic record, defining not only Led Zeppelin but the sound and style of ’70s hard rock. Expanding on the breakthroughs of III, Zeppelin fuse their majestic hard rock with a mystical, rural English folk that gives the record an epic scope. … “Going to California” is the group’s best folk song, and the rockers are endlessly inventive, whether it’s the complex, multi-layered “Black Dog,” the pounding hippie satire “Misty Mountain Hop,” or the funky riffs of “Four Sticks.” But the closer, “When the Levee Breaks,” is the one song truly equal to “Stairway,” helping give IV the feeling of an epic. An apocalyptic slice of urban blues, “When the Levee Breaks” is as forceful and frightening as Zeppelin ever got, and its seismic rhythms and layered dynamics illustrate why none of their imitators could ever equal them.

Bob Dylan – Bob Dylan 1962 U.S. stereo “6 eye” promotional LP

bob dylan u.s. 6 eye stereo promo lp

Offered for sale is an original 1962 U.S. stereo promotional pressing of Bob Dylan, the self-titled debut LP by Bob Dylan.

About this copy: This copy of Bob Dylan is a 1962 U.S. stereo pressing on the “6 eye” Columbia label that was discontinued shortly after the release of this album.

Reportedly, Columbia only pressed 500 copies of this album in stereo with the “6 eye” label.

The cover is VG, with light general wear, but no splits.  There is a sticker in the lower left-hand corner that says “A New Star on Columbia Records.”   The words “DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE” are stamped on the back cover.  There is a bit of glue residue along the lower spine where a piece of tape was removed.

The disc is a stock stereo disc with a white sticker attached to the side one label that says “FOR DEMONSTRATION USE ONLY NOT FOR SALE.”

The disc is VG+ with a few spindle marks on the labels, and a couple of light scuffs.  Side one has a couple of faint hairlines.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.  It does play with slight surface noise between tracks.

Stamper numbers:

Side 1: XSM 55621-1E
Side 2: XSM 55622-1F

A nice copy of a very rare Bob Dylan LP.

Background: Bob Dylan’s 1962 debut got the attention of a few critics, but didn’t do much in the way of sales until later in the decade when he became somewhat more famous.  The first album consisted mostly of cover tunes; it wasn’t until his next album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, that he started to record mostly self-penned material.

Bob Dylan went almost unnoticed upon the original release in 1962, though it did reach #13 on the UK charts, likely after he had success with later efforts.

While this album has been available in stereo for decades, early stereo copies, such as this one, are actually considerably rarer than their mono counterparts.  In the mid-1960s, the vast majority of records sold were in mono, making this early stereo pressing somewhat scarce, particularly in this condition.

Allmusic.com gave Bob Dylan a 4 star review:

Bob Dylan’s first album is a lot like the debut albums by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones — a sterling effort, outclassing most, if not all, of what came before it in the genre, but similarly eclipsed by the artist’s own subsequent efforts. … Within a year of its release, Dylan, initially in tandem with young folk/protest singers like Peter, Paul & Mary and Phil Ochs, would alter the boundaries of that revival beyond recognition, but this album marked the pinnacle of that earlier phase, before it was overshadowed by this artist’s more ambitious subsequent work. In that regard, the two original songs here serve as the bridge between Dylan’s stylistic roots, as delineated on this album, and the more powerful and daringly original work that followed.

Phil Spector – Wall of Sound 1981 UK 9 LP box set with Crystals, Ronettes, etc.

phil spector wall of sound uk LP box set

Offered for sale is a copy of the UK 9 LP box set Wall of Sound by Phil Spector.

This 1981 limited edition set includes Phil Spector-produced material by the Righteous Brothers, the Ronettes, the Crystals, Darlene Love, Bob B. Soxx, and more, with much of the material in stereo.

About this copy: This copy of Wall of Sound is a 1981 UK pressing, with eight of the albums on the Phil Spector International label and the ninth, the Righteous Brothers LP, on the Polydor label.

The box is VG, with wear at the edges and corners, but no tears or splits.

The nine LPs are M-; the discs all look unplayed.  Clean discs!

(Pictures shown of labels of only two of the nine albums.  Photos of the others available on request.)

A beautiful copy of a rare Phil Spector item.  We prefer this box set to the 1991 Back to Mono U.S. box set, as it offers complete albums and it has much of the material in stereo.

Background: By 1981, interest in Phil Spector-produced material by the Ronnettes, Crystals, Righteous Brothers and others was growing in the collector market, but the material was all long out of print worldwide, and with U.S. albums on Spector’s Philles label selling for hundreds of dollars.

Spector, under his Phil Spector International label, reissued much of the material in the UK in the form of nine different LPs, which were issued both separately and in a limited edition box set.

The box contains Dion’s Born to Be With You, the Ronettes Presenting the Ronettes, Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans’ Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah and the Phil Spector Christmas Album in their entirety.  The other albums in the box set are compilations.

Mamas and the Papas – The Mamas and the Papas 1966 Japan LP with obi

the mamas and the papas 1966 japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of The Mamas & the Papas, the self-titled 1966 second LP by the Mamas and the Papas, including the original obi and an alternate cover from the U.S. release.

This album is sometimes referred to as Cass – John – Michelle – Dennie.

About this copy: This copy of The Mamas and the Papas is an original 1966 Japanese pressing on the Victor label.  This pressing featured a unique cover that appeared only on the original Japanese issue.

The cover wasn’t used anywhere else and later Japanese issues used the same cover art as the American pressing (see photo.)

The cover is M-.  The obi is M- with no tears.   This LP was issued without an insert.

The disc is M- and may be unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nearly perfect copy of a very rare (and very good) LP that’s nearly impossible to find complete.  This copy will likely be your final upgrade.

Background: Released just 8 months after their debut, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, the second album by the Mamas and the Papas, the self-titled The Mamas and the Papas, performed almost as well as the first album.

The Mamas and the Papas reached #4 on the Billboard charts, was certified gold by the RIAA, and had four hit singles “Dancing Bear,” “I Saw Her Again,” “Words of Love,” and “Dancing in the Street.”

When originally released in August, 1966, The Mamas and the Papas was released in both mono and stereo.  Though the album stayed in print through the early 1970s, the mono pressings were discontinued in early 1968 and are considerably harder to find than the stereo pressings.  In Japan, however, the album was issued only in stereo.

Allmusic.com gave The Mamas and the Papas a 4 star rating:

Sometimes art and events, personal or otherwise, converge on a point transcending the significance of either — a work achieves a relevance far beyond the seeming boundaries of the creation at hand. During the 1950s and 1960s, in music, it used to happen occasionally for Elvis Presley, the Beatles, and Bob Dylan, once or twice for the Byrds, and a few times for the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones. For the Mamas & the Papas, it happened twice, with their first album, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, and, on a more complex level, with this album — which was astonishing, given that they had a major upheaval in their membership in the midst of recording it. … It’s all a good deal messier than the first album, but it holds up just as well and is just as essential listening.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  There is a hype sticker attached to the wrap that says “Exclusive Featuring 14 of Elvis’ Greatest Hits! on Gold Vinyl.”

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background: Released in 1958, Elvis’ Golden Records was the first compilation album by Elvis Presley.

The album reached #3 on the U.S. album chart and #2 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Elvis’ Golden Records a 3 1/2 star review:

This was rock & roll’s first greatest-hits album, and it set the standard for all others to follow. As originally conceived, it was a 14-song collection of most of the King’s biggest hits up to that time, released on the eve of his start of military service — a dearth of material being in the offing, it seemed only logical to assemble these hits. Each of the 14 songs had earned a Gold record award for a million sales, a record unequaled at that time by anyone else in rock & roll.

Buster Brown - The New King of the Blues Japan LP

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of The New King of the Blues by Buster Brown, including the original obi.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a legendary blues LP.

Background: Released in 1961, The New King of the Blues was the only album by American blues singer Buster Brown.

He is best known for his hit “Fannie Mae,” which reached #38 on the U.S. singles chart in 1960.

The album had a limited release on the tiny Fire label when first issued, and original copies now sell for hundreds of dollars.

Allmusic.com gave The New King of the Blues a 4 1/2 star review:

If blues musicians took up residency in Vegas during the late ’50s, it might come out sounding like this. Brown’s gleeful run through myriad blues related styles (gospel, R&B, doo wop, New Orleans, early rock & roll) casts a vaudevillian sheen over many of the 16 tracks here, placing the performance squarely in the realm of Louis Jordan’s own showy style. The fact Brown had a very brief hour in the sun with his unexpected 1959 hit “Fannie Mae” further indicates his pop approach to blues probably was better suited to the lounges of the chitlin circuit than the main venues of blues and rock & roll.

The cover is VG+ with light general wear on the back cover.

The rare green label stereo disc is VG+, with a few light marks and sleeve scuffs on each side.

A nice copy of a great LP that is very hard to find as an original stereo pressing.

Background: Released in 1956, Chris Connor was the first of 13 albums recorded by jazz singer Chris Connor for Atlantic Records.

The album was recorded in stereo, but the original release was mono only  Two years later, the stereo issue was released. John Lewis and Connie Kay of the Modern Jazz Quartet provided piano and drums, respectively.

Allmusic.com gave Chris Connor a 4 1/2 star review:

The first jazz vocal LP ever released on Atlantic Records, Chris Connor’s self-titled album is one of her best (among considerable competition). Connor’s coarse, throaty tone, sweet phrasing, and unerring rhythm were peaking during the late ’50s, and the results are delightful tweaks of the standards “Anything Goes” and “Almost Like Being in Love.”

The cover is M-. The very rare obi is M-. The insert is VG + + with a couple of minor wrinkles.

The mono disc is VG with a number of light marks on each side but no significant scratches. It should play well.

A nice copy of a very rare MJQ LP.

Background: Released in 1960, Pyramid with the 13th album by the modern Jazz Quartet.

Allmusic.com gave Pyramid a 4 1/2 star review:

This is a strong recording from the Modern Jazz Quartet, with inventive versions of John Lewis’ “Vendome,” Ray Brown’s “Pyramid,” Jim Hall’s “Romaine,” and Lewis’ famous “Django,” along with cooking jams on “How High the Moon” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing.” The MJQ had become a jazz institution by this time, but they never lost their creative edge, and their performances (even on the remakes) are quite stimulating, enthusiastic, and fresh.
