About this copy: This copy of Eight Miles High is a 1969 U.S. pressing on the Atlantic label.

The cover is VG++ with slight edge and corner wear and a small saw mark on the spine.

The disc is VG++ and close to M-, with just a couple of faint sleeve scuffs from the original paper sleeve but no scratches. The record has clearly only been played a couple of times.

A nice copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Released in 1969, Eight Miles High was the fifth album by Golden Earring and their first to use that name, rather than “The Golden Earrings” or “Golden Earrings” as the name had appeared on their previous releases.

The album did not chart anywhere.

Allmusic.com gave Eight Miles High a 4 star rating, though it did not review the album.

The highlight is a 19 minute version of the title track that takes up all of side two.

Kiss – Alive II complete 1977 Japan 2 LP set with obi and all inserts

Offered for sale is a fully complete original Japanese pressing of Alive II by Kiss, including all inserts and the original obi.

This is the first issue that features an obi that describes the bonus items included inside.

About this copy: This copy of Alive II is an original 1977 pressing on the Casablanca label.

The cover is VG+, with wear at the edges and corners. The obi is M-.

The inserts include a lyric insert, two custom inner sleeves, an “Evolution of Kiss” photo booklet, and a sheet of water-slide tattoos that is nearly always missing. The booklet and lyric insert are VG++, with slight foxing. The inner sleeves and tattoo sheet are M-.

The two discs are M- with a few spindle marks on the labels. Clean discs that have had a fair amount of play but have been well cared for.

This copy also includes a poster from Music Life magazine. This is not the rare poster that was given away in stores with the purchase of the album.

A nice copy of an album that rarely turns up complete, as the tattoo sheet is nearly always missing.

Background: Released in 1977, Alive II was the second live album by Kiss.

The Album reached #7 on the U.S. charts and has sold more than two million copies.

For Kiss’ breakthrough 1975 release Alive!, the band had a total of three studio albums from which to select their in-concert repertoire. By mid-1977, Kiss had released another three studio recordings (Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over, and Love Gun), and with a new Kiss album needed for the holiday season, a second live album, Alive II, was assembled. Three sides were recorded live in concert at the Los Angeles Forum (with a few tracks recorded in Japan), while the fourth side featured five new studio recordings. Like its predecessor, there’s been quite a lot of speculation concerning extensive overdubbing (the proof being that you can often hear several Paul Stanley voices singing backup simultaneously!), but Alive II shows that Kiss was still an exciting live band despite all the hype.

A nearly perfect copy of a scarce Rush LP.

Background: Power Windows, released in 1985, was the eleventh studio album by Rush, and it continued Rush’s interest in synthesizer-driven music that was explored to a lesser degree on Signals and Grace Under Pressure.

Helped by five singles (“The Big Money”, “Territories”, “Manhattan Project”, “Mystic Rhythms”, and “Marathon”) the album reached #9 in the UK and #10 in the U.S., where it was certified platinum.

In the UK, the album was briefly available as a limited edition picture disc LP.

Allmusic.com gave Power Windows a 3 star review:

Like much of the band’s ’80s output, Power Windows finds Rush juggling their hard-rock heritage with new technology to mixed results. With Alex Lifeson choosing sparse, horn-like guitar bursts over actual crunch, Geddy Lee’s synthesizers running rampant, and Neil Peart’s crisp, clinical percussion and stark lyrical themes (evoking cold urban landscapes), the result just may be the trio’s “coldest” album ever.

Offered for sale is a first pressing copy of the Japan-only compilation LP Golden Nancy Sinatra by Nancy Sinatra, including the original obi.

There is a 7″ EP with this same cover and title that is far more common than the LP, which rarely turns up for sale.

About this copy: This copy of Golden Nancy Sinatra is an original 1967 issue on the tri-color Reprise label, and not the more common second pressing on the two-color label.

The cover is M-, with trace edge wear at the mouth of the cover. The obi is M-, with no tears.

This LP was issued without an insert, as it has a gatefold cover with four pages of lyrics and photos inside.

The disc is VG+, with a couple of light scuffs from the original paper inner sleeve.. The disc has had relatively little play.

A nice copy of a rare Nancy Sinatra LP that is quite hard to find as a first pressing.

Background: Nancy Sinatra’s career didn’t take off in the United States until 1966, but she’d had success in Japan since her first single in 1962.

As a result, there are a number of compilation albums that have been released with her songs only in Japan. Golden Nancy Sinatra was one of the first of those.

Kiss – Solo Albums Box Set complete 1978 Japan 4 LP set with obi and die-cut posters

Offered for sale is a limited edition Japanese box set containing all four 1978 Kiss solo albums – Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Peter Criss, and Ace Frehley.

All four albums include the original cover, obi, lyric insert, custom inner sleeve, and die-cut poster. All are complete.

These albums were not sold as a set. The special boxes were a giveaway item that retailers provided to customers who purchased all four albums at once.

About this set: This box set of Kiss solo albums is an original 1978 release on the Victor/Casablanca label.

The box itself is VG++, with a couple of minor creases on the back side and a tiny 1/4″ (less than 1 cm) tear near the edge of the flap at the top of the box.

As the box was a giveaway item, and the albums were sold individually, the box itself did not come with an obi.

All four albums have a tiny sticker on the Side One label that has the printed initials “D.P.”

A beautiful copy of a rare Kiss set that is seldom found in this condition.

Note: The price includes Priority Mail shipping and double-boxed packing within the United States.

Background: In 1978, taking a break from their work as a group, all four members of Kiss released solo albums on the same day.

Gene Simmons reached #22 on the U.S. album charts.
Ace Frehley reached #26 on the U.S. album charts.
Peter Criss reached #43 on the U.S. album charts.
Paul Stanley reached #40 on the U.S. album charts.

All four albums were certified Platinum by the RIAA and were also released as limited edition picture discs.

Allmusic.com rated the albums as follows:

Gene Simmons (3 stars) –Most Kiss fans associate Gene Simmons with the band’s hardest-rocking compositions, …which makes Gene’s solo album an unpredictable yet ultimately enjoyable release.

Ace Frehley (4 stars) – Of the four Kiss solo albums released simultaneously in 1978, the best of the bunch is guitarist Ace Frehley’s. Similar in approach to Paul Stanley’s album, Frehley did not stray far from the expected heavy Kiss sound (like Gene Simmons and Peter Criss did with their releases), but Ace was equipped with better compositions than Stanley.

Peter Criss (2 stars) – . Peter Criss’ effort was one of the most undistinguished of the bunch, lacking hooks on either the pop-metal rockers or the power ballads, as well as personality throughout.

Paul Stanley (3 stars) – Paul Stanley’s 1978 solo album was the most Kiss-like of the four, sounding more like an official band release rather than a solo outing. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing — Stanley had become a seasoned hard rock songwriter by this point, churning out some of Kiss’ best material (“Love Gun,” “Detroit Rock City,” “I Want You,” etc.), and wisely stuck to his winning formula on Paul Stanley. … Stanley’s album is more or less what a new Kiss album released in 1978 would have sounded like.

Carmen McRae – The Best of Carmen McRae red vinyl Japan-only LP with rare “half” obi

Offered for sale is an original red vinyl pressing of the Japan-only compilation LP The Best of Carmen McRae by Carmen McRae, including the rare hankake, or “half” obi.

This obi style was used only in late 1963 and early 1964.

About this copy: This copy of The Best of Carmen McRae is an original 1964 pressing on the Kapp label.

The cover is VG+, with a bit of discoloration and a few wrinkles.

The rare hankake obi is VG+, with slight discoloration, but no tears. The lyric insert is VG++ with slight fading.

The red vinyl disc is VG++ on side one with a few spindle marks and a couple of faint scuffs. Side two is VG+, with a few spindle marks and a couple of scuffs that were likely caused by the original paper inner sleeve.

The record is quite clean and has no significant scratches.

A beautiful copy of a very rare Jazz LP that is almost impossible to find complete.

Background: We can’t find much information on this copy of The Best of Carmen McRae.

The album is clearly a 1964 Japan-only issue, and it appears to have never been reissued after the original 1964 release.

This album came out during a very short period, from late 1963 through mid-1964, when Toshiba Records used a hankake obi, or “half obi” on the LPs that they pressed for contracting record companies.

This obi wasn’t complete and didn’t form a loop around the cover. Instead, it attached to the top of the cover only. This resulted in an obi that easily fell off of the album, and was just as easily lost.

Very few albums that were issued with this obi style survive today and we’ve only had 4-5 titles with this style for sale over the years.

Cowsills – Indian Lake original 1968 Japan LP with obi

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Indian Lake by the Cowsills, including the original obi.

This album is the same as the U.S. Captain Sad and His Ship of Fools LP, with the front and back cover reversed.

A beautiful copy of a terrific pop LP and the only copy we’ve ever seen with the obi.

Background: Released in 1968, Captain Sad and His Ship of Fools was the third studio album by the Cowsills.

The album reached #105 on the U.S. album charts. The single, “Indian Lake” reached #10 on the U.S. single charts.

It says a great deal about how pop records were made in the 1960s that the Cowsills’ Captain Sad and His Ship of Fools was the third album the Rhode Island family band would cut within the space of just 12 months, and while most current bands would balk at the workload of cutting one album a year along with touring, 1968’s Captain Sad suggests the Cowsills were handling their busy schedule very well indeed. Captain Sad doesn’t feature as many hits as the Cowsills’ first two long-players (though “Indian Lake” would chart high for the group), but the music is uniformly splendid, and for a group that featured members who were nine and 11, the material is mature, tuneful, and beautifully executed, with excellent harmonies from the siblings and imaginative production from Billy Cowsill and Bob Cowsill.

This LP has the debut of drummer Marty Morell with Bill Evans and bassist Eddie Gomez, and this particular trio would retain the same personnel for six productive years. Actually, this is a quartet set with guest flutist Jeremy Steig, whose playing recalls Herbie Mann’s recording (Nirvana) with Evans back in the early ’60s. Both flutists were always open to the influences of pop and rock, although in both of their collaborations with Evans, the music is very much on the pianist’s turf.

Background: Originally released in 1965, but only outside of the United States, The Paul Simon Song Book was the first solo album by Paul Simon, released after the first Simon & Garfunkel album.

The first album to use this title is one of the most mysterious in Paul Simon’s output and almost belongs more with Simon & Garfunkel’s discography, given its 1965 recording date. Following the failure of Simon & Garfunkel’s first, all-acoustic folk revival-style album, Wednesday Morning, 3 AM, Simon headed off to England to see about pursuing music over there. While he was in London, he found himself in demand as a visiting American “folksinger” (though Simon’s credentials in this area were rather limited), began building up a following in the coffeehouses, and was eventually pegged for a performing spot on the BBC. Suddenly, there were requests for Paul Simon recordings, of which there were none — as a result of his being signed to Columbia Records in America, however, he was brought into the London studios of British CBS and recorded this album with only his acoustic guitar for backup. The resulting album is spare, almost minimalist, as Simon runs through raw and unaffected versions of songs that he was known for in London, including “The Sounds of Silence,” “The Sun Is Burning,” “I Am a Rock,” “A Simple Desultory Philippic” (in its earliest form, and far nastier than the version later done by Simon & Garfunkel), and “Kathy’s Song.”
