Jimi Hendrix – Hendrix Live at the L.A. Forum 1977 U.S. green/yellow splatter vinyl 2 LP live album

Jimi Hendrix - Hendrix Live at the L.A. Forum u.s. color vinyl lp

Offered for sale is a copy of the double live album Live at the L.A. Forum Jimi Hendrix, pressed on colored vinyl with one green splatter vinyl disc and one green and yellow splatter vinyl disc.

About this copy: This copy of Hendrix Alive is a 1977 U.S. pressing on the Ruthless Rhymes label of an album that was originally released in 1970 on the Rubber Dubber label.

The cover is a generic white cover, and is M-.  The original insert is VG, with a couple of minor tears and a few wrinkles.

One disc is green splatter vinyl with some red and yellow mixed in; the other disc is yellow, green and red splatter vinyl.  The green disc has a Ruthless Rhymes label; the green/orange disc has no label at all!

The discs are M- and may be unplayed.  Clean discs!

A rare variation of one of the most sought-after Jimi Hendrix live albums.

Background: Recorded in 1970 and released a number of times on various labels, and under various titles, Live at the L.A. Forum (also known as Hendrix Alive) is a concert recording of Hendrix performing at the Los Angeles Forum on April 25, 1970.

This album was reissued in 1976-1978 by several different labels that were reportedly operated by the same people: Idle Mind Records, Mushroom Records and Ruthless Rhymes records.  We believe the Ruthless Rhymes pressing came first, with the Mushroom pressing following shortly thereafter.

While the sound quality isn’t the best, the album is highly regarded as the performance is considered to be one of Hendrix’s best live shows.

Track titles are:

  • Spanish Castle Magic
  • Foxy Lady
  • Getting Your Brothers Shoes Together
  • Getting My Heart Back Together Again
  • Message to Love
  • Ezy Rider
  • Machine Gun
  • Room Full of Mirrors

Led Zeppelin – Live on Blueberry Hill 1972 U.S. blue/red vinyl live Trademark of Quality 2 LP set

led zeppelin live on blueberry hill u.s. trademark of quality lp

Offered for sale is a rare live album by Led Zeppelin, Live on Blueberry Hill, issued on the Trademark of Quality label with one blue vinyl disc and one red vinyl disc.

About this copy: This copy of Live on Blueberry Hill is a 1972 U.S. pressing on the Trademark of Quality label.

The blue cover has a rubber stamped title and an orange sticker with a pig that says, “Trade Mark of Quality” on the front cover.

The tile is quite well stamped and is fully legible.  The cover is VG+ with dents at all four corners and slight wear along the top left edge.  It’s a nice example with no splits.

The insert is a reproduction.  The original paper inner sleeves are included.  Also included is a replica TMOQ catalog.

This copy has “sideways pig” labels.  These are the labels with the larger pigs that do not say “Made in Holland” on them.

Both discs are VG++ and close to M- with faint scuffs from the paper inner sleeves.  They’re clean discs that have had little play.

A nice copy of a rare Led Zeppelin LP.

Background: Originally issued on the Blimp label and quickly reissued by Trademark of Quality, Live on Blueberry Hill is a live recording of a complete concert from Led Zeppelin’s tour for Led Zeppelin III, recorded at The Forum in Los Angeles, California on September 4, 1970.

Tracks are:

  • Immigrant Song (listed as “From the Midnight Sun” on the insert)/Heartbreaker
  • Dazed & Confused
  • What Is & What Should Never Be
  • Moby Dick
  • Medley (Communication Breakdown, Good Times Bad Times, For What It’s Worth)
  • Since I’ve Been Loving You
  • Organ Improvisation
  • Thank You
  • Out On The Tiles
  • Blueberry Hill
  • Bring It On Home
  • Medley (Whole Lotta Love, Let That Boy Boogie Woogie, I’m Movin’ On, Think It Over, Lemon Song)

Allmusic.com gave Live on Blueberry Hill a 3 star review:

Los Angeles, 1970: Led Zeppelin perform a powerful set of songs (prior to recording Zeppelin III) comprised of heavy blues numbers and a dense onslaught of rock & roll. While the sound clarity is adequate at times, at other moments the sound is faint and simply flat — common flaws in bootleg recordings from this era. Still, the music on Blueberry Hill packs a punch. The set is dominated by three outstanding folk/blues rock medleys: “From the Midnight Sun” (later titled “Immigrant Song”) and “Heartbreaker”; “Communication Breakdown,” “Good Times Bad Times,” “For What It’s Worth” and (not listed) “I Saw Her Standing There,” and Zeppelin’s signature blues rock medley comprised of “Whole Lotta Love,” “Let that Boy Boogie Woogie,” “I’m Movin’ On,” “Think It Over,” and “Lemon Song.” The bass and guitar transitions between the tunes on “Communication Breakdown” medley are funky, and the explosive renditions of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth” and Lennon/McCartney’s “I Saw Her Standing There” are priceless in their inventive approach.

Elvis Presley – Clambake 1967 U.S. stereo LP with bonus photo

elvis presley clambake u.s. stereo LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. stereo pressing of the soundtrack to Clambake by Elvis Presley, including the bonus photo.

About this copy: This copy of Clambake is a 1967 U.S. stereo pressing on the RCA label.

The cover is VG+ with slight edge and corner wear and a neatly repaired 2″ (5 cm) split at the center of the top seam.

The bonus photo is M-.  The RCA inner sleeve is VG with small splits on three sides.

The disc is VG+ with a couple of very light sleeve scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that has had little play.

A nice copy of an album that’s hard to find complete.

Background: Released in 1967, Clambake was the sixteenth soundtrack album by Elvis Presley, and the last to be released in the United States in both stereo and mono.

The album reached #40 on the U.S. album chart and #39 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Clambake a 3 star review:

Kicking off with a vigorous, vital rendition of Jerry Reed’s “Guitar Man” — a song Elvis loved so much he had to record it, publishing deals be damned — Clambake initially seems to deliver a definitive break from Presley’s soundtrack doldrums, but that’s only because “Guitar Man” has nothing to do with Clambake, the film. The good news is, “Guitar Man” is nevertheless a harbinger for a good portion of the rest of the album, which was recorded once Elvis reached a breaking point with the nonsense he had to record for his films…. This isn’t enough to make Clambake a great album, but it does place it on the level of something like Spinout, where the non-movie tracks elevate the soundtrack cuts.

Benny Goodman – Benny Rides Again 1958 Chess promo-only multicolor vinyl LP

benny good man benny rides again u.s. promo lp

Offered for sale is a multicolor vinyl white label promotional copy of Benny Rides Again by Benny Goodman.

About this copy: This copy of Benny Rides Again is a 1958 U.S. mono pressing on the Chess label.

In the late 1950s, Chess Records pressed a few promotional LPs on beautiful multicolor vinl; these pressings were only for promotional use and were not for sale to the public.

The cover is VG+ with moderate wear at the edges and corners.   “D.J. COPIES” has been rubber stamped on the back cover.  There is a bit of writing in pencil on the back cover.

The original “wax paper” style inner sleeve is included.

The multicolor vinyl disc is M- and may be unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a pretty good LP.  The colored vinyl copies of this LP are usually found in terrible condition.

Background: Benny Rides Again is a 1958 LP by American bandleader Benny Goodman.

The LP did not chart.

Allmusic.com gave Benny Rides Again a 3 star review:

Goodman leads a big band again for the majority of this album with few surprises. The instrumentals (all standards except for the recent “Stereo Stomp”) are fine but the unidentified personnel (which has such players as Bob Wilbur, Pepper Adams and Russ Freeman) mostly functions as an anonymous ensemble. Better are the four selections by Goodman and a rhythm section that include pianist Andre Previn.

Pink Floyd – Live (aka Cymbaline) 1973 green/purple U.S. Trademark of Quality live 2 LP set

pink floyd live cymbaline tmoq lp

Offered for sale is a green vinyl and purple vinyl copy of the U.S. double live album Pink Floyd Live, also known as Cymbaline, by Pink Floyd, issued by the Trademark of Quality label.

Note: This LP is one of the hardest titles to find from the Trademark of Quality catalog, and this is one of the rarest color variations of this title.

About this copy:  This copy of Pink Floyd Live is a 1973 U.S.  mono pressing on the collectible Trademark of Quality label, issued on the “smoking pig” variation of the label.

The cover is VG- with general wear.  The entire top seam was split; this has been repaired.  We will include a new plain white cover for storing the discs.

The insert is an original; it has been glued to the front cover.  We don’t know if the cover has a stamped title under the insert or not.  A name has been written on both the cover and insert in ballpoint pen.

The purple disc is VG-, with a number of light marks on each side, but no heavy scratches.  The green disc is closer to VG+ with a number of light scuffs, but no significant marks.  All four sides have “Pink Floyd” written on the labels in ballpoint pen.

The discs play well with some surface noise.

A nice, if imperfect, copy of a very rare Pink Floyd LP and the only copy we’ve seen in more than 40 years of looking for one.  A mint copy of this would likely sell for $2000+.

Background: Released in 1973, but before the band became truly famous, Pink Floyd Live was the second Pink Floyd LP to be issued by the Trademark of Quality label.

The album had previously been issued on the small Dittoline label under the title Cymbaline, and it’s known by both titles in collector’s circles.  For some reason, production on this particular title was quite limited; it’s one of the rarest titles by any artist issued by the Trademark of Quality label.

Recorded (in mono) at the Santa Monica Civic Center in Santa Monica, California on October 23, 1970.  This is the same concert from which the live tracks “Embryo” and “Interstellar Overdrive” that appeared on the earlier Trademark of Quality LP Omayyad were sourced.

Tracks are:

  • Atom Heart Mother (Part 1)
  • Atom Heart Mother (Part 2)
  • Fat Old Sun (listed as “Sing to Me” on the insert)
  • Cymbaline
  • A Saucerful of Secrets

Spike Jones – Omnibust 1960 red vinyl and blue vinyl U.S. stereo 2 LP set

spike jones - omnibust u.s. blue vinyl lp

Offered for sale is a set of two LPs – a  red and blue vinyl U.S. stereo pressing of the 1960 LP Omnibust by bandleader Spike Jones.

Note: A limited number of stereo copies of Omnibust were pressed on colored vinyl to note Liberty Records’ introduction of stereo albums.

About these copies: These copies of Omnibust are 1960 U.S. stereo pressings on the Liberty label.

Red vinyl copy: The cover is VG, with slight wear, but with repaired 5 inch (12 cm) and 3 inch (8 cm) splits at the top and bottom of the cover.  A price has been written on the back cover.

The red vinyl disc is VG++ and close to M- with just a couple of hairlines on each side.  Clean disc!

Blue vinyl copy: The cover is G, with minimal wear, but with repaired splits along both the top and bottom edges.  A price has been written on the back cover.

The blue vinyl disc is VG- with a number of marks on both sides.  We don’t normally list records in this condition, but the blue vinyl copies of this album are exceptionally rare.

A nice, if imperfect, set of copies of an album that are quite had to find on colored vinyl.

Background: Released in 1960, Omnibust was the eighth album by American bandleader Spike Jones.

The album did not chart.

Allmusic.com gave Omnibust this review:

As Spike Jones grew progressively weaker from emphysema, the quality of his records also declined. The music and gags have a rather dated sound, relying too much on weak monologues over indifferent music.

Julie London – Julie is Her Name 1960 U.S. red/blue vinyl stereo 2 LP set

julie london julie is her name u.s. red blue vinyl lp

Offered for sale is a set of two colored vinyl LPs – a U.S. red vinyl and a blue vinyl stereo pressing of Julie London’s debut LP, Julie is Her Name.

A limited number of copies of this 1955 album were pressed on both red and blue vinyl in 1960 to celebrate Liberty Records’ entry into the market for stereo records.  The blue pressings are considerably rarer than the red ones, which are themselves rare.

About this copy: These copies of Julie Is Her Name are 1960 rechanneled stereo pressing s on the Liberty Records label of an album that was originally released in 1955 in mono only.

Red vinyl copy: The cover is VG++ with very light wear on the back cover and a repaired 1″ (2 cm) split at the top right corner.  There are a couple of tiny corner dents.

The original Liberty Records inner sleeve is M- with no splits.  The red vinyl disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

Blue vinyl copy:  The cover is VG++ with very light wear on the back cover and a couple of tiny corner dents.

The original Liberty Records inner sleeve is M- with no splits.  The blue vinyl disc is VG++ with a slight sleeve scuff on side one and a couple of hairlines on side two.  It’s a clean disc that has likely only been played a couple of times..  Clean disc!

A beautiful set of two Julie London albums that are very hard to find as a set.

Background:  Julie London may best be remembered today for her roles on television in the 1970s, but from 1955 through 1969 she cut nearly 30 albums for Liberty Records, most with alluring cheesecake covers.  Don’t be fooled by the covers, though – these are great recordings, especially her early work recorded with jazz ensembles.  Her debut LP, Julie is Her Name, featured Barney Kessell on guitar as well as her biggest hit, Cry Me a River.

While this LP was first issued in 1955 on the green Liberty label, it wasn’t released in stereo until 1960 on the multicolor label used at the time.  The stereo pressings of this album are rechanneled stereo.

In order to promote their new stereo releases, Liberty Records released a handful of titles on colored vinyl at this time, and Julie is Her Name was issued on both red and blue vinyl.

The red vinyl and blue vinyl copies are not equally rare; there are probably ten red vinyl copies for every blue one.

Allmusic.com gave Julie Is Her Name a 4 star review:

For a time, Julie London was as famous for her sexy album covers as for her singing. Her debut is her best, a set of fairly basic interpretations of standards in which she is accompanied tastefully by guitarist Barney Kessel and bassist Ray Leatherwood. “Cry Me a River” from this album, was her biggest hit, and her breathy versions of such numbers as “I Should Care,” “Say It Isn’t So,” “Easy Street,” and “Gone with the Wind” are quite haunting.

You can listen to “Cry Me a River” here:

Duane Eddy – Songs of Our Heritage 1960 red vinyl and blue vinyl U.S. stereo LP set with poster

duane eddy songs of our heritage blue vinyl u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a set of two LPs – a  red and blue vinyl U.S. stereo pressing of the 1960 LP Songs of Our Heritage by Duane Eddy, with each including the original poster.

These two colored vinyl LPs were issued only in stereo; all mono copies were black vinyl.

About this copy: These copies of Songs of Our Heritage are 1960 U.S. stereo pressings on the Jamie label.

Red vinyl copy: The gatefold cover is VG++, with slight corner wear.  The almost-always-missing poster is still attached to the cover.

The red vinyl disc is VG++ and close to M- on side one with a couple of very light inaudible marks.  Side two is M-.  There is a single spindle mark on each label; the record has likely only been played once or twice. Clean disc!

Blue vinyl copy:  The gatefold cover is M-.  The almost-always-missing poster is still attached to the cover.

The blue vinyl disc is VG++ with a couple of faint scuffs from the original paper inner sleeve.  There are no spindle marks on the labels; the record may have only been played once or twice.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a rare Duane Eddy set.  The album sold poorly, especially in stereo, and it’s hard to find either one of these LPs today.  Here’s a chance to get them both at once.

Background: Released in 1960, Songs of Our Heritage was the fourth album by Duane Eddy.  On this album, he covered traditional American folk songs.

The album reached #13 on the UK albums chart, but did not chart in the U.S.

Frank Sinatra – Swing Easy! 1970 Japan red vinyl LP with obi

frank sinatra swing easy red vinyl japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese red vinyl pressing of Swing Easy/Songs for Young Lovers by Frank Sinatra, including the original obi.

Note: This album contains 16 tracks from what were originally two 10″ LPs.

About this copy: This copy of Swing Easy! is a 1970 Japanese pressing on the green Capitol label of material that was originally released in 1954.

The cover is M-.  The obi is VG++ with a couple of foxing spots.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.

The two inserts are M-.

The red vinyl disc is M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific Frank Sinatra LP.

Background:  Swing Easy! was originally released in 1954 as an 8 song 10″ LP.  It was reissued the following year as a 12″ LP and that version combined the 8 songs from Swing Easy! with the 8 songs from the Songs for Young Lovers LP.

This LP is a 16 track Japanese reissue, pressed in about 1970, of the version that contains both albums.

Allmusic.com gave Swing Easy! a 4 1/2 star review:

As the title implies, the record concentrates on up-tempo swingers. Again, the songs were all standards — “Just One of Those Things,” “Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams,” “All of Me” — that benefitted from the new thematic setting, the new arrangements, and, of course, Sinatra’s increasingly playful and textured vocals. Sinatra plays around with the melodies without leaving them behind, delivering each line with precision. It ranks as one of his most jazzy performances, as well as one of his most fun and carefree records.

Beatles – Komm, Gib Mir/Sie Liebt Dich 1978 U.S. red vinyl “promotional” 12″ single

beatles_komm_red

Offered for sale is a red vinyl “promotional” U.S. 12″ single by the Beatles, featuring two songs sung in German – “Sie Liebt Dich,” and “Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand.” (“She Loves You” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”)

About this copy: This is a 1978 12″ U.S. pressing  on the Capitol label, containing “Sie Liebt Dich” on one side and “Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand” on the other.

The labels read “DEMONSTRATION – NOT FOR SALE.” “Mastered by Capitol” is faintly visible in the dead wax area.

The disc is M-, with no marks on the vinyl.  There’s a single spindle mark on the labels, so the record has likely only been played once or twice.  Clean disc!

This disc was issued in a generic white cover.  The cover is VG+ with some discoloration from age, but no tears, wear, or splits.

A nice copy of a fascinating Beatles item.

Background: We’ve put the word “promotional” in quotes in the title because while this item appears at a glance to be a legitimate Beatles promotional item, its manufacture was not authorized by Capitol Records.

In all likelihood, these discs were discreetly pressed by a Capitol employee for their own use.

This odd 12″ single appeared on the market in 1978, and at that time it was offered to collectors as a “promo-only” item, and all copies were pressed on colored vinyl (most were either red or clear, though we’ve seen one or two with an orange/clear mix, a couple of pink ones, and one, and only one, that was black.)

The provenance of this item is unusual; the labels appear to be legitimate Capitol labels but the label is an odd black variation that mentions Paul McCartney’s company MPL Communications at the bottom, and this version of the Capitol label was only used for McCartney titles and never for Beatles records.

The labels say “Demonstration – Not for Sale,” and the record was widely represented by sellers at the time of release as a legitimate promotional item.

Still, it’s an interesting Beatles artifact, and the only time these two German-language songs (German versions of “She Loves You” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand” have appeared together on a single.
