Mickey Baker – The Wildest Guitar original Japan LP with obi

mickey baker - wildest guitar japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of the instrumental LP The Wildest Guitar by Mickey Baker, including the rare original obi.

Note:  This album was originally released in the United States in 1959, but was not released in Japan until 1962.  This version features the same tracks as the U.S. release, but the songs are in a different order.

About this copy: This copy of The Wildest Guitar is an original 1962 pressing on the Atlantic label.

The thin laminated cover is VG+, with slight corner wear and a few minor creases in the lamination.

The ultra-rare obi is M-.  The original plain white paper inner sleeve is included.

This LP does not include an insert; as an instrumental LP, it likely was issued without one.

The disc is VG++, with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that plays well.

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP and the only complete copy we’ve ever seen.

Background: Released in 1959, The Wildest Guitar is the only solo album by Mickey Baker, who was best known as a session musician for Atlantic Records (where he played on may hits by other artists) and as half of the duo of Mickey & Sylvia.

Allmusic.com gave The Wildest Guitar a 4 1/2 star review:

Despite Baker’s well-deserved reputation as one of the most influential guitar players of early rock & roll, The Wildest Guitar was one of the few chances he really got to strut his stuff as a solo artist. This entirely instrumental set features keening, sharp, bluesy riffs in much the same distinctive style that gained him fame on “Love Is Strange” and other tunes with Mickey & Sylvia. … This is a pretty good showcase to hear Baker’s unadorned virtuosity.

Crosby, Stills, Nash – CSN Japan LP with obi

Crosby, Stills, Nash - CSN Japan LP

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of CSN by Crosby, Stills & Nash, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of CSN is a 1977Japanese pressing on the Atlantic label.

The cover is VG++ and close to M-, with slight corner wear.  The obi is M-.

The lyric insert is M-.  The custom inner sleeve is M- with a few wrinkles but no splits or tears.

The disc is VG+ on side one, with an inaudible fingernail mark through the first three tracks.  We’ve played side one and it plays quietly.  Side two is M-.

A nice copy of a terrific LP.

Background: CSN, released in 1977, was the second studio album by Crosby, Stills & Nash (or the third, if you’re counting Deja Vu as a CSN album).  The LP reached #6 on the U.S. charts and has sold 4 million copies.

Allmusic.com gave CSN a 4 star review:

The times had certainly changed since Déjà Vu’s release in 1970. Nevertheless, there was a hunger in audiences for a return to the harmony-soaked idealism with which the trio had been catapulted to popularity, and CSN consequently reached number two on the charts, behind Fleetwood Mac’s megasuccessful Rumours. The music here is very good, though probably not up to the hard-to-match level of Crosby, Stills & Nash or Déjà Vu. …It has held up remarkably well, both as a memento of its time and as a thoroughly enjoyable musical work.

Beatles – 1967-1970 Japan blue vinyl 2 LP set with obi

beatles 1967-1970 japan blue vinyl lp

Offered for sale is a blue vinyl Japanese pressing of the double album The Beatles 1967-1970, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of The Beatles 1967-1970 is a 1982 Japanese issue, pressed on the EMI/Odeon label.

The cover is M-.

The obi is M- with no rips or tears.  The custom lyric inner sleeves are included and have no splits.  The Japanese lyric insert is M-.

The blue vinyl discs are M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

A beautiful copy of a terrific Beatles LP and perhaps the nicest copy we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: In 1973, a company in the U.S. illegally created a “best of” box set by the Beatles called The Beatles – Alpha and Omega.  That album was heavily advertised on television and sold well, but it attracted the attention of the Beatles’ record company, Capitol Records.  They sued to have the album removed from the market.

Seeing a good opportunity, Capitol then issued four discs of Beatles hits themselves as two separate albums with the same cover photos:

The Beatles 1962-1966 covered the band’s early years and had a cover with a red border.  The Beatles 1967-1970 covered the band’s later years and had a cover with a blue border.

In 1978, the two albums were released as limited editions on red and blue vinyl, respectively, in a number of countries around the world, including the U.S. and Japan.  In Japan, the LPs were reissued in 1982 on blue vinyl with the same catalog number and a different obi.

Allmusic.com gave The Beatles 1967-1970 a 4 1/2 star review:

Picking up where 1962-1966 left off, the double-album compilation 1967-1970, commonly called The Blue Album, covers the Beatles’ later records, from Sgt. Pepper’s through Let It Be. Like The Red Album, The Blue Album …contains a mixture of hits, including singles like “Lady Madonna,” “Hey Jude,” and “Revolution” — which had originally appeared only as 45s — plus important album tracks like “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” “A Day in the Life,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and “Come Together,” as well as orphaned tracks such as the single versions of “Let It Be” and “Get Back,” which had never been on any LP before. … As a précis of the group’s final 36 months, it’s all mightily impressive, even if 1967-1970 misses several great songs. But like its predecessor, this set does capture the essence (if not the full range) of the Beatles’ later recordings.

Rolling Stones – Exile on Main St original Japan 2 LP with obi and postcards

rolling stones - exile on main st. japan LP

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of the double album Exile on Main St by the Rolling Stones, including the original obi, lyric insert and set of postcards.

About this copy: This copy of Exile on Main St. is a 1972 pressing on the Rolling Stones Records label.

The cover is VG+, with slight wear on the corners and spine.  The obi is VG-, with a number of wrinkles and small repaired tear at the bottom edge.  The “hojyuhyo,” or reorder tag, is still attached.

The lyric insert is VG, with a lot of foxing, but no writing or tears.  The two custom inner sleeves are VG+ with slight foxing, but no tears.

The first disc is M-, with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  The second disc is VG++ and close to M-, with a few spindle marks and a couple of very faint sleeve scuffs.

The nearly-always-missing postcards are all present and are M-.

A nice copy of an album that is nearly impossible to find as a complete first pressing.

Background: Released in 1972, Exile on Main St. was the 10th British and 12th U.S. studio album by the Rolling Stones.

The album reached #1 on the album charts in both countries.

Allmusic.com gave Exile on Main St. a 5 star review:

Greeted with decidedly mixed reviews upon its original release, Exile on Main St. has become generally regarded as the Rolling Stones’ finest album. Part of the reason why the record was initially greeted with hesitant reviews is that it takes a while to assimilate. A sprawling, weary double album encompassing rock & roll, blues, soul, and country, Exile doesn’t try anything new on the surface, but the substance is new….It’s the kind of record that’s gripping on the very first listen, but each subsequent listen reveals something new. Few other albums, let alone double albums, have been so rich and masterful as Exile on Main St., and it stands not only as one of the Stones’ best records, but sets a remarkably high standard for all of hard rock.

Van Halen – 5150 Japan LP with obi

van halen - 5150 japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of 5150 by Van Halen, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of 5150 is a 1986 pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

The cover is M-. The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is M-.

The disc is M- with a very faint sleeve scuff on side two.  The record looks like it may have been played only once. Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare Van Halen LP.

Background: Released in 1986, 5150 was the seventh album by Van Halen and the first to feature Sammy Hagar on lead vocals.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. charts and #16 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave 5150 a 4 star review:

From the moment the album opens with the crashing “Good Enough,” it’s clearly the work of the same band — it’s hard to mistake Eddie’s guitars, just as it’s hard to mistake Alex and Michael Anthony’s pulse, or Michael’s harmonies — but the music feels decidedly different. … And so Van Hagar was a bit of an odd mix — a party band and a party guy, slowly veering into a bourgeois concept of respectability, something that eventually sunk the band — but on 5150 it worked because they had the songs and the desire to party, so those good intentions and slow tunes don’t slow the album down; they give it variety and help make the album a pretty impressive opening act for Van Halen Mach II.

Eagles – Greatest Hits Japan LP with obi

eagles - greatest hits japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 by the Eagles, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Greatest Hits is an original 1976 pressing on the Asylum label.

The cover is M-  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M-, with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a classic LP.

Background: Released in 1976, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 went on to become the biggest-selling album in history.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. charts and has sold 38 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Allmusic.com gave Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 a 5 star review:

On their first four albums, the Eagles were at pains to demonstrate that they were a group of at least near-equals, each getting a share of the songwriting credits and lead vocals. But this compilation drawn from those albums, comprising the group’s nine Top 40 hits plus “Desperado,” demonstrates that this evenhandedness did not extend to singles — as far as those go, the Eagles belong to Glenn Frey and Don Henley. The tunes are melodic, and the arrangements — full of strummed acoustic guitars over a rock rhythm section often playing a shuffle beat, topped by tenor-dominated harmonies — are immediately engaging….No wonder it was such a big hit out of the box, topping the charts and becoming the first album ever certified platinum. Still, there must be more to it, since the album wasn’t just a big hit, but one of the biggest ever, becoming one of the very few discs to cross the threshold of 20 million copies and competing for the title of best-selling album of all time. There may be no explaining that, really, except to note that this was the pervasive music of the first half of the 1970s, and somehow it never went away.

Paul Simon – Simon Before Garfunkel Japan mono LP with obi

paul simon - simon before garfunkel japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese mono pressing of Simon Before Garfunkel (Recorded in 1964), by Paul Simon, including the original “cap” obi.

This album is the same album The Paul Simon Song Book with a different title and cover and is the original Japanese release.  The title is a bit misleading; the album was actually recorded after the first Simon & Garfunkel album.

About this copy: This copy of Simon Before Garfunkel (Recorded in 1964) is a 1968 pressing on the CBS/Sony label of an album that was originally released in 1965 in the UK, but was not released in Japan until 1968.

Unlike later reissues, this version of the album is in mono and includes a gatefold cover with alternate cover photos.

The cover is M- with a tiny corner dent.  The rare “cap” obi is VG+ , with a few wrinkles.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- with a faint sleeve scuff on side one, but it otherwise looks unplayed.   Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare (and pretty good) Paul Simon LP and the only copy we’ve ever seen that included the obi.

Background: Originally released in 1965, but only outside of the United States, The Paul Simon Song Book was the first solo album by Paul Simon, released after the first Simon & Garfunkel album.

The album did not chart anywhere.

Allmusic.com gave The Paul Simon Song Book a 4 star review:

The first album to use this title is one of the most mysterious in Paul Simon’s output and almost belongs more with Simon & Garfunkel’s discography, given its 1965 recording date. Following the failure of Simon & Garfunkel’s first, all-acoustic folk revival-style album, Wednesday Morning, 3 AM, Simon headed off to England to see about pursuing music over there. While he was in London, he found himself in demand as a visiting American “folksinger” (though Simon’s credentials in this area were rather limited), began building up a following in the coffeehouses, and was eventually pegged for a performing spot on the BBC. Suddenly, there were requests for Paul Simon recordings, of which there were none — as a result of his being signed to Columbia Records in America, however, he was brought into the London studios of British CBS and recorded this album with only his acoustic guitar for backup. The resulting album is spare, almost minimalist, as Simon runs through raw and unaffected versions of songs that he was known for in London, including “The Sounds of Silence,” “The Sun Is Burning,” “I Am a Rock,” “A Simple Desultory Philippic” (in its earliest form, and far nastier than the version later done by Simon & Garfunkel), and “Kathy’s Song.”

Paul Stanley (Kiss) – Paul Stanley 1978 Japan picture disc with obi

paul stanley - japan picture disc lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition Japanese picture disc pressing of Paul Stanley by Paul Stanley, including the original obi.

The Japanese editions of the Kiss solo picture discs have a different image on the back side than the American picture disc.

About this copy: This copy of Paul Stanley is an original 1978 Japanese picture disc, complete with obi and insert.

The cover is M-.  The obi is VG++ with a couple of minor wrinkles on the back, but no tears.  The insert is M-.

The clear plastic inner sleeve has been replaced.

The disc is M- and may be unplayed.

A beautiful copy of a rare Kiss item that rarely turns up for sale.

Background: Picture disc LPs became popular about the time that the four original members of Kiss released their first solo albums, so their record company, Casablanca Records, released each of the four albums as limited edition picture discs in both the U.S. and Japan.

The U.S. edition featured the cover photo of the album on both sides of the picture disc.  The regular black vinyl U.S. editions of the albums included color posters that depicted the band member in cartoon form.

The Japanese picture discs had the cover photo on side one of the disc, but the side two photo was the cartoon image used on the American posters.

While the American picture discs were overpressed to the point that they eventually ended up in cutout bins, the Japanese editions were likely limited to a few hundred copies each and were hard to find even when new.

Allmusic.com gave Paul Stanley a 3 star review:

Paul Stanley’s 1978 solo album was the most Kiss-like of the four, sounding more like an official band release rather than a solo outing. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing — Stanley had become a seasoned hard rock songwriter by this point, churning out some of Kiss’ best material (“Love Gun,” “Detroit Rock City,” “I Want You,” etc.), and wisely stuck to his winning formula on Paul Stanley. … While his other Kiss bandmates took more chances with their solo records (with varying results), Stanley’s album is more or less what a new Kiss album released in 1978 would have sounded like.

AC/DC – Powerage Japan LP with obi

ac/dc - powerage japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Powerage by AC/DC, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Powerage is a 1978 pressing on the Atlantic label.

The cover is VG++, with slight edge wear.  The obi is VG+ with a few wrinkles on the back, but no tears.

The lyric insert is M-.

The disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare AC/DC LP.

Background: Powerage, released in 1978, was the fifth album by AC/DC, and the fourth to receive worldwide distribution. It was also their last album before becoming truly famous, as the follow-up to this LP was 1979’s Highway to Hell.

Powerage only reached #133 on the U.S. album charts, but it was eventually certified as platinum by the RIAA for sales of more than one million units.

Allmusic.com gave Powerage a 3 1/2 star review:

Powerage was a first in the sense that it debuted bassist Cliff Williams, but it really is more of a final curtain to the band’s early years. It would be the last produced by Vanda & Young, the legendary Australian production team who also helmed hits by the Easybeats, and it was the last before AC/DC became superstars. As such, it’s perhaps the most overlooked of their ’70s records, also because, frankly, it is the most uneven of them. Not that it’s a bad record — far from it, actually.

AC/DC – If You Want Blood You’ve Got It original Japan LP with obi

ac/dc -If You Want Blood You've Got It japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of the live album If You Want Blood You’ve Got It by AC/DC, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of If You Want Blood You’ve Got It is an original 1978 pressing on the Atlantic label.

The cover is VG++, with slight general wear.  The obi is M-.  The insert is M-.

The disc is M- with a couple of spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare AC/DC LP, as their albums sold quite poorly in Japan.

Background: Released in 1978, If You Want Blood You’ve Got It was the first live album by AC/DC.

The album reached #113 on the U.S. charts, but reached #13 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave If You Want Blood You’ve Got It a 3 1/2 star review:

AC/DC was fast becoming one of rock’s top live acts by the late ’70s. Few others could match the band’s electrifying live performances: Angus Young’s never-ending energy and wise-ass antics, Bon Scott’s whiskey-soaked vocals, and the rest of the band’s penchant for nailing simple, yet extremely effective and memorable, riffs and grooves. While most other rock bands of the era were busy experimenting with disco or creating studio-perfected epics, AC/DC was one of the few specializing in raw and bluesy hard rock, as evidenced by 1978’s live set, If You Want Blood You’ve Got It. … If You Want Blood You’ve Got It is highly recommended.
