Davy Jones (Monkees) – Davy Jones Deluxe original Japan LP with obi

Davy Jones - Davy Jones Deluxe Japan LP

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Davy Jones DeLuxe by Davy Jones, including the original obi.

This 1969 Japanese LP is the same album as the 1965 U.S. LP David Jones with sides one and two reversed.

About this copy: This copy of Davy Jones DeLuxe is a 1969 Japanese pressing on the Pye label.  While the album was issued in the U.S. in 1965, this is the original Japanese release.

The gatefold cover is VG++ with slight foxing.  The obi is VG+ with a bit of foxing and a small 1/2 cm tear at the top edge.  The cover has six pages of lyrics, liner notes, and photos.

This LP was issued without an insert.

The disc is VG+ with single light scratch on side one through one track and two similar marks on side two.  It’s a clean disc that plays well.

A nice copy of a rare Monkees-related LP.

Background: Released in 1965 before he joined the Monkees, David Jones was the first album by Davy Jones.

The album reached #185 on the U.S. album charts.  The first single, “What Are We Going to Do?” reached #93 on the U.S. singles chart.

Allmusic.com gave David Jones this review:

As fans of the Monkees know, Davy Jones had a career prior to being cast in the television series…. Here he attempts to sing pop hits. … The only indication that it was recorded in the mid-’60s is the album highlight, his cover of Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe.” Here the song becomes an odd combination of lounge/folk/pop and Broadway. Fans and collectors would want this in their collections, but others would find little if anything of interest.

Monkees – Headquarters original 1967 Japan LP with gatefold cover, obi, and poster

monkees - headquarters 1967 japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese pressing of Headquarters by the Monkees, including a Japan-only gatefold cover, poster, and the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Headquarters is a 1967 Japanese pressing on the Victor label.

The gatefold cover is VG++ with slight edge wear.  The obi is VG++ with no tears, but with a big of discoloration from age.

The poster is M- and is still attached to the cover.  This LP was issued without an insert.

The disc is VG.  It appears to be VG+ with a couple of light marks on each side, but there are many, many spindle marks on the labels and it plays with some noise, so we’ll call it VG.

A nice copy of a very rare Monkees album that is hard to find complete, as the poster and obi are usually missing.

Background: Released in May, 1967, Headquarters was the third album by the Monkees, and the only album on which they played all of their instruments.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. album charts and #2 on the UK charts.

Allmusic.com gave Headquarters a 4 1/2 star review:

With the help of producer Chip Douglas, the band spent some time learning how to be a band (as documented on the Headquarters Sessions box set) and set about recording what turned out to be a dynamic, exciting, and impressive album. … Headquarters doesn’t show the band to be musical geniuses, but it did prove they were legitimate musicians with enough brains, heart, and soul as anyone else claiming to be a real band in 1967. [Rhino’s 1995 reissue adds six previously unissued tracks recorded during the Headquarters sessions including an early take of the single “The Girl I Knew Somewhere” and rare demos “Nine Times Blue” and “Pillow Time.”]

Beatles – Rubber Soul 1970 Japan red vinyl Apple LP with obi

Beatles - Rubber Soul Japan red vinyl Apple LP

Offered for sale is a red vinyl Japanese pressing of Rubber Soul by the Beatles, complete with the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Rubber Soul is a 1970 pressing on the Apple label of an album that was originally released in 1965 on the Odeon label, pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with a faint disc impression in the front cover.  The obi is VG+, with no tears, but the “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag), is missing.

The black paper inner sleeve is M- and has no splits.  The lyric insert is VG++ with slight foxing.

The red vinyl disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels and a couple of very faint sleeve scuffs.  It’s a clean disc that plays well.

A nice copy of a terrific LP that rarely turns up in this condition.

Background: Released in December, 1965, Rubber Soul was the seventh Beatles album to be released by Capitol Records.  The U.S. version of the album, which had a different track lineup from the UK version, reached #1 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Rubber Soul a 5 star review:

While the Beatles still largely stuck to love songs on Rubber Soul, the lyrics represented a quantum leap in terms of thoughtfulness, maturity, and complex ambiguities. Musically, too, it was a substantial leap forward, with intricate folk-rock arrangements that reflected the increasing influence of Dylan and the Byrds. The group and George Martin were also beginning to expand the conventional instrumental parameters of the rock group, using a sitar on “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown),” Greek-like guitar lines on “Michelle” and “Girl,” fuzz bass on “Think for Yourself,” and a piano made to sound like a harpsichord on the instrumental break of “In My Life.”

Released in 1996, Death Magnetic was the ninth studio album by Metallica.

The album reached #4 on the UK charts and #1 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Death Magnetic a 4 star review:

Call Death Magnetic Kirk Hammett’s revenge. Famously browbeaten into accepting Lars Ulrich and producers Bob Rock’s dictum that guitar solos were “dated” and thereby verboten for 2003’s St. Anger — a fraught recording chronicled on the 2004 documentary Some Kind of Monster — Metallica’s lead guitarist dominates this 2008 sequel, playing with an euphoric fury not heard in years, if not decades.

Listening to the band play, it’s hard not to thrill at Metallica’s mastery of aggression and escalation. There is no denying that the band is older and settled, no longer fueled by the hunger and testosterone that made their ’80s albums so gripping, but on Death Magnetic older doesn’t mean less potent. Metallica is still vitally violent and on this terrific album — a de facto comeback, even if they never really went away — they’re finally acting like they enjoy being a great rock band.

Pink Floyd – A Saucerful of Secrets original UK mono LP G/G stampers

Pink Floyd - A Saucerful of Secrets UK mono LP

Offered for sale is an original UK mono pressing of A Saucerful of Secrets, the second album by Pink Floyd.

The U.S. release was issued only in stereo; the mono mix is quite different.

About this copy: This copy of A Saucerful of Secrets is a 1968 UK mono pressing on the black and blue Columbia label.

The laminated flipback cover is VG++ with slight edge wear on the back.

The disc is a weak VG+ with a number of faint marks and a number of spindle marks on the labels.  It looks quite clean at first glance and plays well.

Stampers are G on side one and G on side two; this copy was one of the first 300 copies pressed.

A nice copy of a very rare Pink Floyd LP.

Background: Released in 1968, A Saucerful of Secrets was the second album by Pink Floyd, the first to include guitarist/singer David Gilmour, and the last to include founder/guitarist/singer Syd Barrett.

The album reached #9 on the UK charts but only reached #158 on the U.S. charts.

Allmusic.com gave A Saucerful of Secrets a 3 1/2 star review:

A transitional album on which the band moved from Syd Barrett’s relatively concise and vivid songs to spacy, ethereal material with lengthy instrumental passages. Barrett’s influence is still felt (he actually did manage to contribute one track, the jovial “Jugband Blues”), and much of the material retains a gentle, fairy-tale ambience.

Metallica – And Justice for All U.S. 4 LP 45 RPM half speed mastered box set

Metallica - And Justice for All u.s. 45rpm lp

About this copy: This copy of …And Justice For All is a 2008 U.S. pressing on the Warner Brothers label.

The box is M-.  The original “Louder Faster Heavier” banner is M-.  The insert is M-.

The four album covers (only one is shown in photos) are M-.

The four 180 gram 45 RPM discs are M- and look unplayed.  Clean discs!

A nearly perfect copy of a rare Metallica set.

Background: Starting in 2008, Metallica released their entire catalog in the form of limited edition, high quality, half speed mastered 180 gram pressings.

These were issued at both 33 1/3 speed and also at 45 RPM for better sound quality.

Released in 1988, …And Justice Fro All was the fourth studio album by Metallica.

The album reached #4 on the UK charts and #6 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave …And Justice for All a 4 1/2 star review:

The most immediately noticeable aspect of …And Justice for All isn’t Metallica’s still-growing compositional sophistication or the apocalyptic lyrical portrait of a society in decay. It’s the weird, bone-dry production. The guitars buzz thinly, the drums click more than pound, and Jason Newsted’s bass is nearly inaudible. It’s a shame that the cold, flat sound obscures some of the sonic details, because …And Justice for All is Metallica’s most complex, ambitious work; every song is an expanded suite, with only two of the nine tracks clocking in at under six minutes. It takes a while to sink in, but given time, …And Justice for All reveals some of Metallica’s best material.

Pink Floyd – The Piper at the Gates of Dawn 1967 U.S. mono LP

Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn u.s. mono LP

Offered for sale is an original U.S. mono pressing of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the first album by Pink Floyd.

The U.S. mono release is far harder to find and has a different track lineup than the relatively common (but still expensive) UK release.  The mono version features significantly different mixes from the stereo release.

About this copy: This copy of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is an original 1967 mono pressing on the brown Tower label.

The cover is VG+ with faint general wear.  The seams are all intact.  There is a small punch hole in the lower right hand corner.

The cover has a “2” in the lower right hand corner of the cover, indicating that it was printed at Capitol’s Scranton, Pennsylvania pressing plant.

The disc is VG+ with no significant marks on the vinyl, but it does have some scuffs from the original paper inner sleeve.

A nice copy of a very rare Pink Floyd LP.

Background: Released in 1967, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was the first album by Pink Floyd, which then included Syd Barrett on guitar and vocals.

The album was released in the U.S., UK, and Canada in both stereo and mono in late 1967.  While many UK buyers were still purchasing albums in mono in 1967, most U.S. buyers were choosing stereo releases at that time, and the U.S. mono album was deleted shortly after release, while the UK album stayed in print in mono for several years.

The mono version of the album features significantly different mixes from the stereo version.

While the Canadian pressing had the same track lineup as the UK issue, the U.S. pressing was quite different.

The UK album had 11 tracks, but the U.S. version deleted three of them (“Astronomy Domine,” “Flaming,” and “Bike”) and added “See Emily Play,” which had been recently issued as a single.

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was one of the last albums issued on mono by Tower Records; the label only released four albums in mono after this one.

UK version has these eleven tracks:

  • Astronomy Domine
  • Lucifer Sam
  • Matilda Mother
  • Flaming
  • Pow R. Toc H.
  • Take Up They Stethoscope and Walk
  • Interstellar Overdrive
  • The Gnome
  • Chapter 24
  • The Scarecrow
  • Bike

The U.S. copy (this one) has these nine tracks:

  • See Emily Play
  • Pow R. Toc H.
  • Take Up They Stethoscope and Walk
  • Lucifer Sam
  • Matilda Mother
  • The Scarecrow
  • The Gnome
  • Chapter 24
  • Interstellar Overdrive

Allmusic.com gave The Piper at the Gates of Dawn a 5 star review:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn successfully captures both sides of psychedelic experimentation — the pleasures of expanding one’s mind and perception, and an underlying threat of mental disorder and even lunacy; this duality makes Piper all the more compelling in light of Barrett’s subsequent breakdown, and ranks it as one of the best psychedelic albums of all time.

Janos Starker – Complete Suites For Unaccompanied Cello Japan 3 LP box with obi

Janos Starker – Complete Suites For Unaccompanied Cello Japan LP

We believe this set to be unplayed new old stock.

The three discs are M- and appear to be unplayed.  Beautiful discs!

A nearly perfect copy of an album that has long been sought out by both audiophiles and classical music collectors.

Background:  Janos Starker (1924-2013) is widely considered to be one of the greatest cellists of all time.

His 1963-1965 recordings of Complete Suites For Unaccompanied Cello are regarded as definitive and are also an example of an exceptionally well-recorded album.

Original copies of the U.S. pressing of the album have sold for more than $2000.

Here is what the Absolute Sound had to say about Complete Suites for Unaccompanied Cello:

For all his disclaimers, it’s widely agreed that Starker’s recorded performances of the Bach Suites are as close to definitive as any performance can be. The combination of musical intensity and beauty with his all but incomparable technique is irresistible. Arguably, only Feuermann achieved a comparable physical mastery of the cello, and on these Mercury recordings Starker was at the height of his technical powers. Starker’s style, in which expressiveness is abundant but all traces of schmaltz or gratuitous emotion are banished, suits the music of Bach perfectly.

About this copy: This copy of Have You Seen Your Mother Live is a 1967 Japanese pressing on the London label.

The cover is VG++ with slight edge wear.  The obi is M-.  The insert is VG++ with slight discoloration from age.

The disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare Rolling Stones album that is hard to find complete.

Background: Released in late 1966, Got Live If You Want It was the first live album by the Rolling Stones.

The album reached #6 on the U.S. album charts; the LP was not released in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Got Live If You Want It a 3 star review:

A live document of the Brian Jones-era Rolling Stones sounds enticing, but the actual product is a letdown, owing to a mixture of factors, some beyond the producers’ control and other very much their doing. The sound on the original LP was lousy, and for that matter not all of it’s live; a couple of old studio R&B covers were augmented by screaming fans that had obviously been overdubbed. Still, the album has its virtues as a historical document, with some extremely important caveats for anyone not old enough to recognize the inherent limitations in a live album of this vintage.

A nice copy of a scarce Bill Evans LP.

Background: Released in 1965, Trio ’65 was the twenty seventh album by pianist Bill Evans.

Allmusic.com gave Trio ’65 a 4 star review:

Although all eight of the selections heard on this Verve release have been recorded on other occasions by pianist Bill Evans, these renditions hold their own. Teamed up with bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker (his regular trio of 1963-1965), Evans plays definitive versions of such songs as Johnny Carisi’s “Israel,” “How My Heart Sings,” “Who Can I Turn To,” and “If You Could See Me Now.”
