Porcupine Tree – Recordings still sealed 2010 UK 2 LP set

porcupine tree - recordings LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the limited edition UK double LP Recordings by Porcupine Tree.

About this copy: This copy of Recordings is a sealed 2 LP set on the UK Kscope label.  This was a limited edition of 2000 copies.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears or holes.  The LPs are presumably new and unplayed.

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Recordings was a compilation album of unreleased tracks and B-sides of singles from the Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun recording sessions.

Originally released on compact disc in 2001, the album was released on vinyl by Kscope Records in the UK in 2011 as a limited edition of 2000 copies.

Allmusic.com gave Recordings a 3 star review:

Released as a semi stopgap collection in mid-2001 during a period of general Porcupine Tree inactivity, outside of some concert appearances here and there, Recordings compiles the various B-sides and extra tracks from singles taken from Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun, adding a couple of unreleased goodies as well. It’s obviously for the hardcore fans more than anyone else — those wanting an introduction to the band will find it of interest but not the best place to start. Those hardcore fans, though, will find it a very enjoyable release, with the previously unavailable songs of definite interest.

(Porcupine Tree) Steven Wilson – Insurgentes sealed 2009 UK 2 LP set

steven wilson - insurgentes lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed UK pressing of the 2009 2 LP set Insurgentes by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree.

About this copy: This copy of Insurgentes is a sealed original UK pressing on the Kscope label.

As the album is sealed, the discs are presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips or tears.

A nice copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Insurgentes was the first solo album by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree.  The album reached #116 on the UK charts but did not chart in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Insurgentes a 4 star review:

It caused a stir when it was announced: Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree and No-Man fame) was to release his first-ever full-length solo album. The first question to pop up was: why? After a couple decades of activity under his belt, and two handfuls of bands and projects past and present (including several solo outfits, like Bass Communion), why would he release an album under his own name, and what would that album be like? Well, as it turned out, Insurgentes is basically a Porcupine Tree album in which Wilson wrote all the songs and made all the decisions, including the one to not include all current members of Porcupine Tree in the project. Is that a problem, fans might ask? Not at all. In fact, Insurgentes is an excellent slab of progressive-tinged alternative rock, and a logical next step from Fear of a Blank Planet, PT’s last album at this point.

(Porcupine Tree) Blackfield – Welcome to My DNA sealed 2011 UK LP

As the album is sealed, the records are presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact, with no rips, tears or holes.

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Welcome to My DNA, released in 2011, was the third of several collaborations between Israeli singer Aviv Geffen and Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree.

Allmusic.com gave Welcome to My DNAa 3 1/2 star review:

On Welcome to My DNA, their third studio album, Aviv Geffen and Steven Wilson of Blackfield continue to pursue their neo-progressive Pink Floyd-meets-Tears for Fears sound, overlaying it with doom-ridden imagery. The Pink Floyd influence is overt in the slow-paced soundscapes and echoey vocals, though at times Blackfield pick up the pace and even rock a bit, notably on “Blood,” which has a Middle Eastern rhythm at times. … The album is, thus, something of a downer, but the music aims toward a majestic simplicity that it sometimes achieves.

Porcupine Tree – Lightbulb Sun sealed white vinyl 2 LP set

porcupine tree- lightbulb sun white vinyl lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition numbered white marbled vinyl pressing of the 2 LP set Lightbulb Sun by Porcupine Tree, issued in 2008 on Tonefloat records.   This was the first pressing of this album on vinyl.

About this copy: This copy of Lightbulb Sun is the original 2008 numbered limited edition white marbled vinyl pressing of an LP that was originally released in 2000.  While the album was released on compact disc in 2000, the album was not commercially released on vinyl until 2008.

This set was pressed on both black and clear vinyl; the clear vinyl editions were a numbered limited edition and sold out as preorders.

This copy is number 311 of 1000 copies, as indicated on the hype sticker attached to the shrink wrap.

The wrap is fully intact except for a small break in the lower right hand corner.  The upper right hand corner has a small bend.

A beautiful copy of a terrific album.

Background: Lightbulb Sun, released in 2000, was the fifth studio album by Porcupine Tree.  The album reached #161 on the UK charts, but did not chart in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Lightbulb Sun a 4 star review:

Some older fans looked askance at Lightbulb Sun, feeling it was verging on overt commercialism (and admittedly, the near power ballad solo on “Where We Would Be” is a bit odd!). Then again, given Wilson’s own explorations of avant-garde pop with No-Man, who’s to say why a slightly more radio-friendly stance can’t work? “Shesmovedon” may have been a single, but there’s no question who wrote and performed it — the elegant cascade of backing vocals on the chorus shows that much. Certainly Wilson hasn’t turned into Max Martin or anything — it’s still very much Porcupine Tree, in its lyrical turns of phrase and general sense of exploration.

A beautiful copy of a terrific album.

Background: Lightbulb Sun, released in 2000, was the fifth studio album by Porcupine Tree.  The album reached #161 on the UK charts, but did not chart in the U.S.

Alan Parsons Project – I Robot Classic Records 45 RPM Clarity test pressing side A1

alan parsons - i robot clarity test pressing

Offered for sale is a one-sided 45 RPM test pressing of side A1 of the unreleased 4 disc Clarity vinyl pressing of I Robot by the Alan Parsons Project, pressed by Classic Records.

About this copy:  This test pressing is of side A1 only, containing the tracks “I Robot” and “I Wouldn’t Want to Be Like You.”

The disc was issued in a plain white cover with a sticker indicating the catalog number.

Cover and the clear vinyl Clarity vinyl disc are M-.  The disc looks unplayed, but does have a few tics during the first minute or so of play.

Background: In 2007 or so, Classic Records released a high quality audiophile pressing of I Robot, pressed on black vinyl and cut at the standard 33 1/3 RPM.

They intended to release the album at 45 RPM, pressed on their new clear “Clarity” vinyl in the form of four single-sided discs but the company went out of business before they could do so.  While they never commercially released the title in that format, a few test pressings of the complete set exist.

This is a test pressing of the first disc only from that set, containing the first two tracks from the album.

It sounds terrific.

Bob Dylan – John Wesley Harding 1976 Japan LP with obi

bob dylan - john wesley harding japan lp

Offered for sale is a 1976 Japanese pressing of John Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan, complete with original obi and lyric insert.

About this copy: This copy of John Wesley Harding is 1976 Japanese reissue of an LP originally released in 1968.

The cover is M-.  The obi is VG+, with a small tear at the bottom.  The original lyric insert is included.

The disc is M- and looks unplayed.

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Originally released in late 1967, John Wesley Harding was Bob Dylan’s eighth studio LP and offers a retreat from the rock sound of his previous three albums.  It’s best remembered today for the original version of “All Along the Watchtower,” a song later made famous by Jimi Hendrix.

The album sold well, reaching #2 on the U.S. charts and reaching #1 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave John Wesley Harding a 5 star review:

Bob Dylan returned from exile with John Wesley Harding, a quiet, country-tinged album that split dramatically from his previous three. A calm, reflective album, John Wesley Harding strips away all of the wilder tendencies of Dylan’s rock albums — even the then-unreleased Basement Tapes he made the previous year — but it isn’t a return to his folk roots. … Although the lyrics are somewhat enigmatic, the music is simple, direct, and melodic, providing a touchstone for the country-rock revolution that swept through rock in the late ’60s.

Jethro Tull – Benefit 1977 Japan white label promo LP with obi

jethro tull benefit japan promo lp

Offered for sale is a 1977 Japanese white label promotional pressing of Jethro Tull’s 1970 LP Benefit, complete with original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Benefit is a Japanese 1977 white label promotional copy on the Chrysalis label, complete with lyric insert and original obi.   This is the second issue; the first issue was released in 1970 on the Reprise label.

This LP has the UK track listing, including “Alive and Well and Living In,” but excluding “Teacher,” which appeared only on the U.S. release

The cover is VG+, with faint wear at the edges and corners.  The obi is VG++, with slight wear on back, but no rips or tears.

The original lyric insert is included.

The white label promo disc is M- and looks unplayed.

A beautiful copy of a very rare record, as Jethro Tull albums sold quite poorly in Japan.

Background:  Benefit was Jethro Tull’s third LP, and it was the album where they abandoned their blues roots and embraced the flute-folk-rock sound that they’d use successfully for the rest of their career.

Based on tracks such as “Teacher” (which was not on the UK release), “With You There to Help Me”, and “To Cry You a Song”, the album reached #11 on the U.S. album charts and was certified gold by the RIAA.

In the U.S. first pressings of Benefit were issued on the Reprise label.  In 1972, the album was reissued on the Chrysalis label, as were all subsequent pressings.  Reprise pressings, particularly clean ones, have become rather hard to find.

Allmusic.com gave Benefit a 4 star review:

Benefit was the album on which the Jethro Tull sound solidified around folk music, abandoning blues entirely. Beginning with the opening number, “With You There to Help Me,” Anderson adopts his now-familiar, slightly mournful folksinger/sage persona, with a rather sardonic outlook on life and the world; his acoustic guitar carries the melody, joined by Martin Barre’s electric instrument for the crescendos. This would be the model for much of the material on Aqualung and especially Thick as a Brick, although the acoustic/electric pairing would be executed more effectively on those albums.
