5th Dimension – Up Up and Away red vinyl Japan LP with obi

5th dimension - up up and away red vinyl japan lp

Offered for sale is an original red vinyl Japanese pressing of Up, Up and Away by the 5th Dimension, complete with original obi.

This LP has a cover that is different from the U.S. cover and which was unique to the Japanese release.

About this copy: This copy of Up, Up and Away is an original 1967 Japanese issue on the Liberty label.

The cover is M-.  The obi and lyric insert are VG++, with a few minor wrinkles.

The red vinyl disc is quite clean; side 1 is VG++ with a couple of faint sleeve scuffs.  Side 2 is M-.

A beautiful copy of a terrific record that’s quite hard to find complete.

Background: Up, Up and Away, released in 1967, was the debut LP by the 5th Dimension.  It reached #8 on the U.S. album chart, helped by the title track, which reached #7 on the U.S. singles chart.

Allmusic.com gave Up, Up and Away a 3 star review:

Released in 1967, the first album release from the often maligned though talented and singular group the 5th Dimension was also a feature for Jimmy Webb, who contributed to one track and arranged and conducted the whole effort. The most well-known song remains one of the finer songs of the decade; “Up-Up and Away” matched the group’s gorgeous harmonies, with a great and ethereal yet full-bodied production. …Up, Up and Away was certainly commendable for the style forged here, but even better work was ahead for the group.

Dresden 45 – Paradise Lost 1988 Texas thrashcore LP

dresden 45 - paradise lost lp

Offered for sale is a copy of Paradise Lost by Dresden 45, issued in 1988 by Jack Leg Records.

About this copy: This copy of Paradise Lost is an original pressing on the Texas-based Jack Leg label.

The cover and disc are M-; the LP looks unplayed.

The back cover has been signed in ball point pen by the band’s bass player, Charlie Hardwick, as “Uncle Charlie.”  We obtained the LP from him a long time ago.

Background:   According to Wikipedia, Dresden 45 was a hardcore punk and crossover thrash band from Houston, Texas, also known as D’45 and variantly, D45. They were one of the first hardcore bands to implement a guitar-driven heavy metal sound into their music. Like other Houston bands Dirty Rotten Imbeciles and Verbal Abuse, Dresden 45 played a breathless, high-speed type of hardcore punk now referred to as thrashcore.

Tracks are:

  • Newton’s Bad Apple
  • No Need
  • Swiss Bank Account
  • Live For Money
  • Briar Patch
  • Smokin’ USA

George Harrison – Electronic Sound sealed Zapple 8 track tape

george harrison - electronic sound 8 track tape

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. 8 track tape of George Harrison’s Electronic Sound.

About this copy: This copy of Electronic Sound is a still sealed 8 track tape on the Apple/Zapple label. The LP was issued on Zapple, but the tape case says “Apple” on it.

The shrink wrap has a few tears in it, and there’s a bit of wear on the box in the upper right hand corner.

This tape is presumably new and unplayed.

A nice copy of one of the more unusual Beatles solo items.

Background: Released in 1969, George Harrison’s Electronic Sound was his second solo album, though this one consisted entirely of electronic music.

The album peaked at #191 on the Billboard album chart and was released on vinyl, cassette, and 8 track tape.

Allmusic.com gave Electronic Sound a 4 star review:

Hard as it is to believe, George Harrison, guitar picker, was also an electronic music pioneer, as these two lengthy, abstract tone poems for early-vintage Moog synthesizer reveal. A naif in the electronic sphere, George had a lot of help putting this music together, particularly from ace California electronic composer Bernie Krause. …Though scoffed at when they were released, these pieces can hold their own and then some with many of those of other, more seriously regarded electronic composers. And when you consider that synthesizers were only capable of playing one note at a time and sounds could not be stored or recalled with the push of a button, the achievement becomes even more remarkable. Alas, George never followed up on this direction, which, like the Zapple label, was abandoned after this release.

Lou Reed – Metal Machine Music sealed 1975 promo 2 LP set

lou reed - metal machine music sealed promo lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed promotional copy of the 1975 double LP Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed.

About this copy: This copy of Metal Machine Music is a sealed original pressing on the RCA label.

The words “Not for Sale – Promo Copy” are embossed in the upper right hand corner of the front of the cover.

As the album is still sealed; the discs are presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact except for a tiny 1/4″ break along the bottom edge.

A beautiful copy of an album that often turns up with considerable cover wear and the first sealed copy we’ve had in many years.

Background: At the time of its release, no one really knew what to make of Metal Machine Music, though the album has since come to be regarded as a precursor to industrial and similar genres.

It’s an LP of four sides of processed guitar feedback, and listening to it can be a taxing experience.

Allmusic.com gave Metal Machine Music a 1 star review:

One would be hard-pressed to name a major artist who ever released an album as thoroughly alienating as Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music; at a time when noise rock and punk had yet to make their presence known, Reed released this 64-minute aural assault that offered up a densely layered soundscape constructed from feedback, distortion, and atonal guitar runs sped up or slowed down until they were all but unrecognizable. Metal Machine Music seems a bit less startling today, now that bands like Sonic Youth and the Boredoms have created some sort of context for it, but it hasn’t gotten any more user friendly with time — while Thurston Moore may go nuts on his guitar like this for three or four minutes at a stretch, Metal Machine Music goes on and on and on for over an hour, pausing only for side breaks with no rhythms, melodies, or formal structures to buffer the onslaught.

Porcupine Tree – Deadwing sealed clear vinyl 2 LP set

porcupine tree - deadwing clear vinyl lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition clear vinyl pressing of the 2 LP set Deadwing by Porcupine Tree, issued in 2018 on Kscope records.

About this copy: This copy of Deadwing is a 2018 clear vinyl limited edition pressing of an LP that was originally released in 2005.

This set was pressed on both black and clear vinyl; the clear vinyl editions were limited and sold out as preorders.

This LP is new and unplayed; the album was not sealed at the factory, but was instead shipped in a resealable bag.  We received this copy directly from the record company and haven’t opened it.

A beautiful copy of a terrific album.

Background: Deadwing, released in 2005, was the eighth studio album by Porcupine Tree, and their highest charting album up to that time, reaching #97 in the UK and #132 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave Deadwing a 3 star review:

Porcupine Tree have always been pigeonholed with the modern prog movement, but the reality is that they’re both a riff-addicted metal band and a troupe obsessed with rich harmonies and memorable refrains. …If the 12-minute sonic meander known as “Arriving Somewhere but Not Here” is as head-trippy as rock music gets anymore, it is reassuring to know that this Tree is still growing. Ideal for headphones, Deadwing — despite its title — takes flight nonetheless.

Porcupine Tree – Up the Downstair sealed UK red vinyl 2 LP set

porcupine tree - up the downstair red vinyl lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed red vinyl UK pressing of the 2 LP set Up the Downstair by Porcupine Tree.

About this copy: This copy of Up the Downstair is a limited edition 180 gram red vinyl pressing on the KScope label, issued in the UK in 2008.  This is a reissue of an album that was originally released in 1993.

The double album is still sealed; the records are presumably new and unplayed.

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Originally released in 1993, Up the Downstair was the second album by Porcupine Tree.  The album received relatively little notice at the time and did not sell well.

Allmusic.com gave Up the Downstair a 4 star review:

Up the Downstair feels noticeably different in tone from On the Sunday of Life — the humor is nearly invisible, if present at all, and the focus is more explicitly up to date in keeping with Steven Wilson’s long-stated belief that progressive music means incorporating the now instead of rehashing what progressive was. His singing is now more accomplished in turn — it sounds like he might have been taking a lesson or two from his No-Man partner Tim Bowness, but he has his own dreamy approach. His already accomplished studio work seems to have turned even more so with time, and the end result is a delicate, complex, and remarkable effort.

Porcupine Tree – Voyage 34 sealed UK white vinyl 2 EP set

porcupine tree - voyage 34 white vinyl

Offered for sale is a still sealed white vinyl numbered limited edition UK pressing of the double EP Voyage 34 by Porcupine Tree, issued in 2010 by Kscope Records.

About this copy: This copy of Voyage 34 is a still sealed white vinyl double 12″ EP pressing, issued in 2010.  This copy is number 756 of 2000 copies.

We call it an EP: it actually runs some 70 minutes across four sides.

As the album is still sealed, the records are presumably new and unplayed.

A beautiful copy of a terrific set.

Background: Voyage 34 was recorded in the early 1990s, and the track was recorded for their Up the Downstair album but was instead released (in edited form) as a single.

In 2010, Kscope released an expanded version as a 2 LP set, pressed on white vinyl.

Allmusic.com gave Voyage 34 this review:

Voyage 34, originally a two-volume EP series from 1992-1993, was expanded into “The Complete Trip” after Steven Wilson remixed and added production for its eventual re-release seven years later. Documenting the ill effects of an acid trip by a frequent user (the first 33 were fine), the four-phase work begins with a straight-laced narrator explaining the events leading up to the trip, with straight-ahead (though slightly exploratory) guitar work by Wilson over a mid-tempo drum section.

Porcupine Tree – The Incident sealed numbered 2009 Dutch 2 LP set

porcupine tree - the incident lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed numbered limited edition Dutch pressing of The Incident by Porcupine Tree, including a 48 page book that was not included in standard editions of the album.

About this copy: This copy of The Incident is a still sealed numbered copy (1631/2000) of the limited edition version of the album that included a 48 page booklet that was not issued with the standard version of the LP.

The shrink wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears or holes.

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Released in 2009, The Incident was the final studio album by Porcupine Tree.  The album was the band’s highest charting album ever, reaching #23 in the UK and #25 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave The Incident a 3 1/2 star review:

Set up similarly to Rush’s 1978 classic, Hemispheres, The Incident is comprised of a single long song — the title track — that features many different movements (which would have taken up the entire side one back in the good ol’ days of vinyl), as well as a handful of shorter compositions that close the album. The aforementioned title track will certainly be the talk of the album, as it manages to incorporate bombast and melody (the sixth movement, which shares the album’s title), rock (“Octane Twisted”), Yes’ folky moments (“The Seance”), and Tool-like grooves (“Circle of Manias”), before it all gently floats away on a cloud of fairy dust (“I Drive the Hearse”). That said, unlike early proggers who favored meandering instrumental doodling over succinct songwriting, Porcupine Tree always favor the importance of memorable songs over flashy solos, which certainly makes the group one of the top modern-day prog rock bands.

Porcupine Tree – Signify sealed 2011 UK 2 LP set

porcupine tree signify lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the 2011 UK pressing of the double album Signify by Porcupine Tree.

About this copy: This copy of Signify is the 2011 UK pressing on the Kscope label, pressed on 180 gram black vinyl.

The LP is still sealed, and the records are presumably new and unplayed.  The shrink wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.

A beautiful copy of a terrific LP.

Background: Originally released in 1996, Signify was the fourth album by Porcupine Tree.  The album did not sell well and did not reach the charts anywhere.

Allmusic.com gave Signify a 4 star review:

The first proper album by the full band, Signify was the next great step forward for Porcupine Tree, a distinct advancement in how well the foursome could completely rock out as well as find its own narcotic style of ambient exploration….The often gripping instrumental pieces which are as much a band trademark as anything else appear throughout, including the combination drift and charge of “Idiot Prayer,” littered with intriguingly curious samples, and the amusingly titled, hellfire and brimstone preacher-punctuated “Intermediate Jesus.”
