Alan Parsons Project – Tales of Mystery and Imagination Canada yellow vinyl LP

Alan Parsons Project - Tales of Mystery and Imagination Canada yellow vinyl LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed limited edition yellow vinyl Canadian pressing of Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Allan Poe by the Alan Parsons Project.

About this copy: This copy of Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Allan Poe is a 1978 Canadian pressing on the 20th Century Fox Records label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes.  There is a hype sticker on the cover that says “LIMITED EDITION COLOURED VINYL” in both English and French.

Unlike most copies, this one does not have a cutout hole.

A virtually perfect copy of a terrific LP, as opened copies of this album almost always have significant ring wear on the cover.

Background:Released in 1976, Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Allan Poe was the debut LP by the Alan Parsons Project.

The album reached #38 on the U.S. charts and #56 in the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Allan Poe a 4 1/2 star review:

Tales of Mystery and Imagination is an extremely mesmerizing aural journey through some of Edgar Allan Poe’s most renowned works. With the use of synthesizers, drums, guitar, and even a glockenspiel, Parsons’ shivering effects make way for an eerie excursion into Poe’s well-known classics. … With vocalists Terry Sylvester, John Miles, and Eric Woolfson stretched across each track, this variety of different singing styles adds color and design to the album’s air. Without any underlying theme to be pondered upon, Alan Parsons instead paints a vivid picture of one of the most alluring literary figures in history by musically reciting his most famous works in expert fashion.

Beatles – Let It Be 1970 red vinyl Japan box set LP with obi and book

beatles let it be box set japan lp

Offered for sale is a complete original Japanese red vinyl box set pressing of Let It Be by the Beatles, including the original obi and 164 page The Beatles Get Back book.

About this copy: This copy of Let It Be is a 1970 Japanese pressing on the Apple label, pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl.

This is the limited edition box set that included the 164 page softcover book titled The Beatles Get Back.

This set consists of:

  • An outer box with a removable slipcover
  • An obi around the box
  • A tray to hold the book
  • A copy of the 164 page softcover The Beatles Get Back book.  This book was printed in the UK and has English text.  There is a sticker on the back.
  • A non-gatefold cover for the LP itself
  • A lyric insert
  • A red vinyl copy of the Let It Be album

The box itself is VG++ and close to M- with trace edge wear.  The die-cut “medallion” obi is M-.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.  There are no tears in the obi.

The tray for the book is VG+ with a few wrinkles on one of the flaps.  There are no tears.

The book is VG+ with slight edge wear.  It’s tightly bound and has no loose pages.

The LP cover is VG+ with slight edge and corner wear.  The lyric insert is M-.

The red vinyl disc is M- on side one and VG++ (and close to M-) on side two with two faint scuffs through the first two tracks.  There are a number of spindle marks on the labels, but the record is exceptionally clean.

A beautiful copy of a set that’s hard to find complete and is usually found in terrible condition.  The original retail price of this box set was close to $100 in today’s dollars.  As it was quite expensive, it did not sell well.

Background: Let It Be was the final studio album by the Beatles, issued just as they were breaking up in early 1970.  Containing the hits “Let It Be” and “The Long and Winding Road,” the album reached #1 on the album charts in both the U.S. and the UK.

In Japan, as in the UK and Canada, the album was released as both a box set with a 164 page book and a regular issue with a gatefold cover, similar to the U.S. release.  First pressings were issued on “Everclean” red vinyl.

Allmusic.com gave Let It Be a 4 1/2 star review:

The only Beatles album to occasion negative, even hostile reviews, there are few other rock records as controversial as Let It Be.   … All that said, the album is on the whole underrated, even discounting the fact that a sub-standard Beatles record is better than almost any other group’s best work. …As flawed and bumpy as it is, it’s an album well worth having, as when the Beatles were in top form here, they were as good as ever.

Klaus Schulze (Tangerine Dream) – Timewind original UK LP

Klaus Schulze – Timewind uk lp

Offered for sale is an original UK pressing of Timewind, the fifth album by Klaus Schulze.

About this copy: This copy of Timewind is a 1975 UK pressing on the Caroline label.

The cover is M-.  The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce (and pretty good) electronic LP.

Background: Released in 1975, Timewind was the fifth album by Tangerine Dream founding member Klaus Schulze.

Allmusic.com gave Timewind a 4 star review:

Dedicated to Richard Wagner, Timewind is a 60-minute electronic expedition that is broken up into two half-hour tracks, “Bayreuth Return” and “Wahnfried 1883.” The first 30 minutes involves icy pulsations and lengthy tonal flights that unnoticeably converge into each other. While one rhythm gains momentum, the other one slowly fades into a bubbly electronic bath of bright swirls and meandering keyboard waves. Similar to early Tangerine Dream, the music here rises and falls above a distant sonic horizon, and the effect is truly mesmerizing. One specific flow can last for minutes, while small, detailed noises adhere themselves to the main electronic run. On the second track, more of the same far-off synthesized altering takes place, but the washes of keyboard become inoculated with a sharper, more precise sound. Longer notes build into resilient pieces with the same comforting result. This album will sketch a barren wasteland in the mind through the wispiness of the wind-like effects. Timewind serves as splendid mood music, and the ears are forever kept busy following Schulze’s electronic wandering.

Klaus Schulze (Tangerine Dream) – X 1978 German 2 LP set

klaus schulze - x german lp

Offered for sale is an original German pressing of the double album X, the tenth album by Klaus Schulze.

About this copy: This copy of X is a 1978 German pressing on the orange Brain label.

The gatefold cover is VG+ with faint ring wear and slight creases in the lamination.

The two discs are M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a scarce Klaus Schulze LP.

Background: Released in 1978, X was the tenth solo album by German electronic musician Klaus Schulze.

Allmusic.com gave X a 4 star review:

Each track on X or “Ten” (since it’s Schulze’s tenth release ) is titled after famous German personalities, but it’s the provocative electronic music within the names that makes this one of his best albums. On this two-CD set, Schulze’s sequencer is joined by electric guitar and drums, that pleasingly brings an earthy, simplistic feel into his pastiches. Still captivating and alluring with his multi- keyboard entourage, the tracks each exhibit a personality all their own. … A true pioneer at his craft, Schulze’s X is one of the more definitive albums of his career, since it’s length and instrumental combinations make for a multifaceted electronic piece.

About this copy: This copy of Mirage is a 1977 UK pressing on the Island label.

The cover is VG++ with slight ring wear.  The disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a pretty good electronic LP.

Background: Released in 1977, Mirage was the eighth album by prolific German electronic musician Klaus Schulze.

Allmusic.com gave Mirage a 4 1/2 star review:

Mirage is one of Klaus Schulze’s best albums. It is certainly among the eeriest e-music sets ever. He created it as “an electronic winter landscape dedicated to Hans Dieter Schulze.” … The album has cold and icy textures that take listeners to the brink of the winter solstice. The experimental timbres give the set a sci-fi feel. This is vital space music.

Rolling Stones – Metamorphosis Japan white label promotional LP with obi and promo flyer

The cover is M-, with one or two foxing spots.  The obi is VG++ with slight foxing on the back.

The lyric insert is VG++ with slight discoloration from age one one edge.  The promotional flyer is M-.

The white label promo disc is M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare Rolling Stones LP.

Background: Released in 1975, Metamorphosis was a compilation album by the Rolling Stones that featured alternate versions and demos of some of their 1964-1969 songs.

The album reached #8 on the U.S. album chart and #45 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Metamorphosis a 3 star review:

Though it remains the only Rolling Stones outtakes collection album ever to be officially released, Metamorphosis is one of those albums that has been slighted by almost everyone who has touched it, a problem that lies in its genesis. While both the Stones and former manager Allen Klein agreed that some form of archive release was necessary, if only to stem the then-ongoing flow of bootlegs, they could not agree how to present it. Of the two, the band’s own version of the album, compiled by Bill Wyman, probably came closest to the fan’s ideal, cherrypicking the vaults for some of the more legendary outtakes and oddities for a bird’s-eye view of the entire band’s creative brilliance. Klein, on the other hand, chose to approach the issue from the songwriting point-of-view, focusing on the wealth of demos for songs that Jagger/Richards gave away (usually to artists being produced by Andrew Oldham) and which, therefore, frequently featured more session men than Rolling Stones. …All of which adds up to an impressive pedigree, whatever the circumstances behind the album, and whatever else could have been included on it. Indeed, if there are any criticisms to be made, it is that the album sleeve itself is singularly uninformative, and the contents are seriously jumbled. But those are its only sins. Everything else you’ve heard about it is simply wishful (or otherwise) thinking.

Rolling Stones – Some Girls Japan white label promotional LP with poster and press release

rolling stones some girls japan promo lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese white label promotional copy of Some Girls by the Rolling Stones, including the original obi and a five page promo-only press release.

About this copy: This copy of Some Girls is a 1978 Japanese pressing on the Rolling Stones label.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with slight corner wear.  The obi is M-.  The custom inner sleeve is M-.

The lyric insert is VG+ with a bit of discoloration from age and a corner fold.  The five page press release (in Japanese) is M-.

The white label promo disc is M- and may be unplayed.  Clean disc!

A beautiful copy of a classic Stones LP.

Background: The Rolling Stones’ 1978 LP Some Girls is one of their best-selling albums ever, reaching #1 on the charts in both the U.S. and the UK. It’s also the album that featured their last #1 hit, “Miss You.”

The album featured a die-cut cover that included photos of both band members and famous celebrities. Shortly after the release of the album, the band was sued by the representatives of some of those famous people, forcing the record company to remove the images of everyone but the band members.

The words “cover under reconstruction” appeared where the images of Lucille Ball, Jackie Onassis and Marilyn Monroe had appeared in the earlier design.

Allmusic.com gave Some Girls a 5 star review:

During the mid-’70s, the Rolling Stones remained massively popular, but their records suffered from Jagger’s fascination with celebrity and Keith’s worsening drug habit. By 1978, both punk and disco had swept the group off the front pages, and Some Girls was their fiery response to the younger generation. Opening with the disco-blues thump of “Miss You,” Some Girls is a tough, focused, and exciting record, full of more hooks and energy than any Stones record since Exile on Main St. Even though the Stones make disco their own, they never quite take punk on their own ground. Instead, their rockers sound harder and nastier than they have in years…. Some Girls may not have the back-street aggression of their ’60s records, or the majestic, drugged-out murk of their early-’70s work, but its brand of glitzy, decadent hard rock still makes it a definitive Stones album.
