Pink Floyd – The Final Cut 1983 Japan Mastersound audiophile LP with obi

pink floyd the final cut japan mastersound lp

Offered for sale is a limited edition Japanese Mastersound pressing of The Final Cut by Pink Floyd, including the original obi.

This pressing was part of CBS/Sony’s short-lived “Mastersound” audiophile series.  Like most titles in the CBS Japan Mastersound series, this LP has been digitally remastered.

About this copy: This copy of The Final Cut is a 1983 pressing on the CBS/Sony label.

The outer cover is VG, with wear along the top edge.  The inner gatefold cover is VG++ and close to M- with slight edge and corner wear.

The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is VG+ with discoloration from age.

The two generic Mastersound catalogs are M-.

The disc is VG+ with several scuffs on each side and many spindle marks on the labels.  It’s a fairly clean disc that’s been well care for but it does play with some noise.

A nice copy of a scarce Pink Floyd LP.  This is the first copy of this version that we’ve ever had for sale.

Background: In the early 1980s, CBS Records in the U.S. and Japan created a limited edition series of high quality audiophile pressings of then-new and older LPs that were pressed on premium vinyl and sold at a premium price.  The series did not last long and most titles were quickly discontinued.

In the U.S., most of the titles were half speed mastered.  In Japan, most of the titles were digitally remastered pressings.

Released in 1983, The Final Cut was the twelfth studio album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts and #6 in the U.S.

Allmusic.com gave The Final Cut a 3 star review:

The Final Cut extends the autobiography of The Wall, concentrating on Roger Waters’ pain when his father died in World War II. Waters spins this off into a treatise on the futility of war, concentrating on the Falkland Islands, setting his blistering condemnations and scathing anger to impossibly subdued music that demands full attention. This is more like a novel than a record, requiring total concentration since shifts in dynamics, orchestration, and instrumentation are used as effect. …And it’s equally clear that Pink Floyd couldn’t have continued in this direction — Waters had no interest in a group setting anymore, as this record, which is hardly a Floyd album in many respects, illustrates. Distinctive, to be sure, but not easy to love and, depending on your view, not even that easy to admire.

Pink Floyd – The Wall 1979 Japan 2 LP set with obi and sticker

pink floyd the wall japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese pressing of The Wall by Pink Floyd including the original “cap” obi and rare title sticker.

About this copy: The copy offered for sale is a 1979 pressing on the CBS/Sony label and includes both custom sleeves, the Japanese lyric insert,  and the hard to find “cap” obi that folds over the cover.

This copy also has the clear sticker that was originally attached to the shrink wrap when the album was new.

The cover is M-.   The “cap” obi is M- with trace wear on one edge.   The lyric insert is M-

The clear title sticker that was originally attached to the (now-missing) shrink wrap has been attached to the front cover.  The sticker is VG++ with some yellowing from age.

The two custom inner sleeves are M-.  This copy is unusual in that there is no foxing on either the cover or the inner sleeves.

The two discs are M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

A nearly perfect copy of a classic LP that’s hard to find complete, as the obi and sticker are usually missing.

Background: Pink Floyd’s 1979 double album The Wall alienated a few fans and made the band a bunch of new ones.  Regardless of opinion, the album sold in the millions and is highly regarded by audiophiles as being among the best-sounding albums in the band’s catalog.

The long-out-of-print Japanese pressing is generally regarded as the best, and has been on the Absolute Sound’s recommended list for decades.

Allmusic.com gave The Wall a 4 1/2 star review:

The Wall was Roger Waters’ crowning accomplishment in Pink Floyd. It documented the rise and fall of a rock star (named Pink Floyd), based on Waters’ own experiences and the tendencies he’d observed in people around him. By then, the bassist had firm control of the group’s direction, working mostly alongside David Gilmour and bringing in producer Bob Ezrin as an outside collaborator. Drummer Nick Mason was barely involved, while keyboardist Rick Wright seemed to be completely out of the picture. Still, The Wall was a mighty, sprawling affair, featuring 26 songs with vocals: nearly as many as all previous Floyd albums combined.

A nice copy of a classic LP that is almost never found with all inserts.

Background: Released in 1975, Wish You Were Here was the ninth studio album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the charts in the U.S. and the UK.

Allmusic.com gave Wish You Were Here a 5 star review:

Pink Floyd followed the commercial breakthrough of Dark Side of the Moon with Wish You Were Here, a loose concept album about and dedicated to their founding member Syd Barrett. The record unfolds gradually, as the jazzy textures of “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” reveal its melodic motif, and in its leisurely pace, the album shows itself to be a warmer record than its predecessor. Musically, it’s arguably even more impressive, showcasing the group’s interplay and David Gilmour’s solos in particular. And while it’s short on actual songs, the long, winding soundscapes are constantly enthralling.

Pink Floyd – The Piper at the Gates of Dawn sealed 1967 U.S. stereo LP

pink floyd the piper at the gates of dawn u.s. stereo lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed U.S. stereo pressing of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the first album by Pink Floyd.

Note: While the full title appears on the back cover, the spine and label simply list the title as The Pink Floyd.

About this copy: This copy of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a U.S.  stereo pressing on the Tower label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

Label variation is unknown, but the number “9” appears on the back cover.  This suggests that the album was pressed at Capital Records’ Jacksonville, Illinois pressing plant and the album likely has the second “striped” Tower label.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips or tears.  There are no punch holes in the cover.  There are a couple of breathe holes in the shrink wrap; this is common on 1960s albums pressed by Capitol.

A nice copy of a very rare Pink Floyd LP and the first sealed copy we’ve had for sale in many years.

Background: Released in 1967, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was the first album by Pink Floyd, which then included Syd Barrett on guitar and vocals.

The album reached #6 on the UK album chart and #131 on the U.S. chart.

The album was released in the U.S., UK, and Canada in both stereo and mono in late 1967.  The U.S. version, issued by Tower Records, went out of print in 1970 when Capitol Records shut down their Tower Records subsidiary label.  The album has not been reissued on vinyl in the U.S. since the original release.

The UK album had 11 tracks, but the U.S. version deleted three of them (“Astronomy Domine,” “Flaming,” and “Bike”) and added “See Emily Play,” which had been recently issued as a single.  The track appears in rechanneled stereo on this LP.

UK version has these eleven tracks:

  • Astronomy Domine
  • Lucifer Sam
  • Matilda Mother
  • Flaming
  • Pow R. Toc H.
  • Take Up They Stethoscope and Walk
  • Interstellar Overdrive
  • The Gnome
  • Chapter 24
  • The Scarecrow
  • Bike

The U.S. copy (this one) has these nine tracks:

  • See Emily Play
  • Pow R. Toc H.
  • Take Up They Stethoscope and Walk
  • Lucifer Sam
  • Matilda Mother
  • The Scarecrow
  • The Gnome
  • Chapter 24
  • Interstellar Overdrive

Allmusic.com gave The Piper at the Gates of Dawn a 5 star review:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn successfully captures both sides of psychedelic experimentation — the pleasures of expanding one’s mind and perception, and an underlying threat of mental disorder and even lunacy; this duality makes Piper all the more compelling in light of Barrett’s subsequent breakdown, and ranks it as one of the best psychedelic albums of all time.

  • Red poster of band members (different from U.S. issue)
  • 32 page booklet with band history, lyrics, photos and more (in both English and Japanese

The record is visually M-, with no marks on the vinyl, but there a few spindle marks and a few foxing spots on the labels.  It’s a clean disc that has had fairly little play.

A nice copy of an album that is very difficult to find complete, as the posters and card are usually missing.

Background: The Dark Side of the Moon was Pink Floyd’s eighth album and it’s the one that made them superstars. Reaching #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the UK, the album is one of the biggest selling albums in history.

While the album topped the U.S. charts for only one week, it spent 741 weeks in the U.S. top 200 – fifteen years.

Due to popularity with buyers, the album has been released in multiple limited editions around the world over the years, including several different colored vinyl pressings and as a picture disc.

In Japan, the album was issued multiple times with multiple variations, in 1973, 1974 (twice; stereo and quad), 1977, 1978 and 2016.

Allmusic.com gave The Dark Side of the Moon a rare 5 star review:

By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush, immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections, Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon. …Pink Floyd may have better albums than Dark Side of the Moon, but no other record defines them quite as well as this one.

Background:  The Dark Side of the Moon was one of three Pink Floyd albums (along with Atom Heart Mother and Wish You Were Here) to be released in the 4 channel quadraphonic format.

While all three were released on vinyl in quad in various countries worldwide, only Wish You Were Here was issued on vinyl in the U.S. as a quadraphonic pressing.

The Dark Side of the Moon was issued in quad in the UK, Germany, Japan, and Australia on vinyl, but the U.S. issue was only released as an 8 track tape.

Pink Floyd – A Nice Pair sealed 1973 U.S. 2 LP set

pink floyd - a nice pair u.s. lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed originall 1973 U.S. pressing of the double album A Nice Pair by Pink Floyd.

This double album reissues the 1967-1968 LPs The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and A Saucerful of Secrets, with a couple of track substitutions.

About this copy: This copy of A Nice Pair is a 1973 U.S. pressing on the Harvest label.

As the album is still sealed, the records are presumably new and unplayed.  The cover has two stickers that say “A Nice Pair” over the photos of a woman’s breasts.  A third sticker is attached to the wrap that says “Pink Floyd Special Low Priced Two Record Set.)   The spine shows the original $7.98 U.S. list price.

The wrap is fully intact with no rips, tears, or holes, aside from a couple of factory “breathe holes” in the shrink wrap.

A nearly perfect copy of a Pink Floyd set that’s hard to find as a first pressing.

Background: Released in 1973, A Nice Pair reissued the band’s first two LPs – The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and A Saucerful of Secrets.  In the U.S., both albums had been out of print for years, but the success of The Dark Side of the Moon inspired a reissue of the band’s earlier material.

The U.S. and UK versions of the album had a couple of minor differences – a cover photo advertising a dentist appeared on the U.S. version; this was replaced with a different photo in the UK.

The first track on the album, “Astronomy Domine,” appeared as a studio track on the UK version (as it had on the original LP) but in the U.S., the live version of the song from the Ummagumma LP was used instead.

This set features “Flaming” in mono; later pressings used a stereo version.

Allmusic.com gave A Nice Pair a 4 star review.

In the wake of the mega-hit status achieved earlier in 1973 by Dark Side of the Moon, executives at Capitol Records, in tandem with their counterparts in other countries, decided to remarket the group’s earlier catalog; in America, this meant reissuing their first two LPs, Piper at the Gates of Dawn (originally issued stateside as Pink Floyd, in edited form) and A Saucerful of Secrets, both of which originally appeared on the Capitol subsidiary label Tower and were, by then, out of print. The result was a double LP called A Nice Pair, which was also put out in England — which was odd, since both original albums were still readily in print on that side of the Atlantic.

Pink Floyd – Atom Heart Mother 1974 Japan RM quadraphonic LP with obi

pink floyd atom heart mother japan rm quad lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese quadraphonic copy of Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd, including the original obi.

While this copy was mastered in RM quadraphonic (also known as QS), it will play on all stereo turntables and offers a different mix from the regular stereo release.

About this copy: This copy of Atom Heart Mother is an original 1974 pressing on the EMI/Odeon label.

The cover is VG++ and close to M- with a couple of foxing spots inside the gatefold cover and  trace corner wear.   The obi is VG++ with slight foxing, but no tears.

The 6 page lyric/liner note booklet (with information in both English and Japanese) is M-.  The single page insert about the RM Quadraphonic process is VG++ with a couple of minor foxing spots.

The black vinyl disc is M- with a few spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a rare Pink Floyd LP.

Background:  Released in 1970, Atom Heart Mother was the fifth album by Pink Floyd.

The album reached #1 on the UK charts, but peaked at #55 on the U.S. charts, making it what was then the highest-ever charting album in the U.S.

The album was one of three (along with The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here) to be remixed for quadraphonic sound, though the quad mix was not released on vinyl in the U.S.

It was, however, released in SQ quadraphonic in the UK and in RM (aka QS) quad in Japan.

The quad version of the album offers a different mix from the stereo version.

Allmusic.com gave Atom Heart Mother a 3 star review:

Appearing after the sprawling, unfocused double-album set Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother may boast more focus, even a concept, yet that doesn’t mean it’s more accessible. If anything, this is the most impenetrable album Pink Floyd released while on Harvest, which also makes it one of the most interesting of the era. Still, it may be an acquired taste even for fans, especially since it kicks off with a side-long, 23-minute extended orchestral piece that may not seem to head anywhere, but is often intriguing, more in what it suggests than what it achieves.
