Beatles – Hey Jude 1970 Japan red vinyl LP with obi

beatles hey jude red vinyl japan lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese red vinyl pressing of Hey Jude by the Beatles, including the original die-cut obi.

About this copy: This copy of Hey Jude is a 1970 Japanese pressing on the Apple label.

The cover is VG+ with slight corner and edge wear.  The die-cut “medallion” obi is VG+ with a few wrinkles and slight foxing, but no tears.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.

The lyric insert is M-.  The black paper inner sleeve is M-.

The disc is M- with a few spindle marks and slight foxing on the side two label, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a scarce Beatles LP and the first copy we’ve had for sale in several years.

Background: Hey Jude was a compilation LP put together by Beatles management, rather than Capitol or Parlophone Records.  The release was intended to capitalize on the success of the group’s recent #1 single, “Hey Jude.”

The album consisted of a number of songs that had either been previously released as singles or which had not previously been released on Capitol/Apple albums.

The album reached #1 in the U.S., but wasn’t released in the UK until a few years later.

Allmusic.com gave Hey Jude a 3 star review:

Appearing in the U.S. just two months prior to the band’s April 1970 breakup, Hey Jude is one of the odder Beatles records released during the group’s lifespan. Essentially a clearinghouse for singles that never appeared on album, the record relies heavily on songs released between 1968 and 1969, but it also stretches back to get both sides of the 1966 single “Paperback Writer”/”Rain” and “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “I Should Have Known Better,” two 1964 songs that never appeared on a Capitol LP (but did show up on the soundtrack to A Hard Day’s Night, which was released by United Artists in 1964). This scope inadvertently showcases the Beatles’ versatility and growth, as they move from the exuberance of Beatlemania to the intense psychedelia of the mid-’60s and then settle into rich post-Pepper days, where John, Paul, and George (Ringo sings no songs here) were all pursuing their own obsessions.

Beatles – The Original Greatest Hits sealed 1964 U.S. mono LP

beatles - the original greatest hits u.s. LP

Offered for sale is a still sealed copy of the U.S. LP The Original Greatest Hits by the Beatles.

Note: This 1964 LP was the first unauthorized album of Beatles music to reach stores in the U.S. and was deleted shortly after release due to legal threats from Capitol Records.  Despite the fact that the word “Beatles” does not appear on the cover or label, the recordings on this album are original recordings by the Beatles.

About this copy: This copy of The Original Greatest Hits is a 1964 U.S. mono pressing on the Greatest Records label.

As the album is still sealed, the record is presumably new and unplayed.

The wrap is fully intact, with no rips, tears, or holes.  There are no drill holes, saw marks or cut corners.

A nearly perfect copy of a very rare Beatles LP that is usually found in terrible condition.  This will likely be your final upgrade.

Background: During the height of Beatlemania in 1964, record companies were all scrambling to find something that they could release to cash in on the band’s popularity.

Many companies licensed older recordings, such as the Tony Sheridan “My Bonnie” and other similar tracks.

A previously unknown record company, Greatest Records, took a different approach.  They simply released an album of genuine Beatles recordings without the permission of Capitol Records.

They thought they could get away with it by not mentioning “Beatles” on the cover, thinking that the public could figure out what the record was despite the artist not being named.  This made the album appear very much like similar albums by Beatles cover bands that were then flooding the market.

Capitol Records did notice and likely threatened to sue and The Original Greatest Hits quickly disappeared from the market.

The address for the record company on the back cover is the same address used on the first issue of the later release The Savage Young Beatles, so this album is likely the work of the same people.

Tracks are:

  • Twist And Shout
  • I Want To Hold Your Hand
  • All My Loving
  • Please Please Me
  • From Me To You
  • Do You Want To Know A Secret
  • Love Me Do
  • Can´t Buy Me Love
  • Roll Over Beethoven
  • Please Mister Postman
  • I´ll Get You
  • She Loves You

Beatles – Revolver 1986 Japan red vinyl mono LP with obi

beatles revolver japan red vinyl mono lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese red vinyl mono pressing of Revolver by the Beatles, including the original obi, insert, and record company postcard.

Note: Original 1966 Japanese pressings of Revolver were issued in stereo only.  The album was made available in mono as a limited edition in 1982 and again in 1986.

About this copy: This copy of Revolver is a 1986 mono pressing on the EMI/Odeon label of an album that was originally released in Japan in 1966 in stereo only.

The cover is M-.  The obi is M-.  The lyric insert is VG+ with some discoloration from age.  The nearly-always-missing postcard is M-.

The red vinyl disc is M- and looks unplayed.  Beautiful disc!

A beautiful copy of a terrific record and one of the hardest titles to find in the red vinyl mono series.

Background: In the 1960s, most Japanese LPs were issued in stereo only, so most Japanese buyers never had the opportunity to hear the original mono mixes of most of the Beatles songs.

In 1982, EMI records released limited edition red vinyl pressings in mono of all of the Beatles albums from Please Please Me through Yellow Submarine.  This series was reissued in 1986 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band’s 1966 visit to Japan.

Revolver, released in August, 1966, was the seventh studio album by the Beatles.  The album reached #1 in the U.S. and UK and has never gone out of print.

Allmusic.com gave Revolver a 5 star review:

All the rules fell by the wayside with Revolver, as the Beatles began exploring new sonic territory, lyrical subjects, and styles of composition. … The biggest miracle of Revolver may be that the Beatles covered so much new stylistic ground and executed it perfectly on one record, or it may be that all of it holds together perfectly. Either way, its daring sonic adventures and consistently stunning songcraft set the standard for what pop/rock could achieve. Even after Sgt. Pepper, Revolver stands as the ultimate modern pop album and it’s still as emulated as it was upon its original release.

Beatles – White Album sealed white vinyl German DMM 2 LP set

beatles white album german white vinyl dmm lp

Offered for sale is a still sealed limited edition white vinyl pressing of the limited edition direct metal mastered German pressing of the The Beatles (aka the White Album) by the Beatles, including all original inserts.

Note: This pressing is regarded by many as the best-sounding version of The White Album ever released on vinyl. (see below)

About this copy: This copy of The White Album is a 1985 German pressing on the Apple label.

As the album is still sealed, the records are presumably new and unplayed.  The four photos of the band members and the poster should be inside.

The wrap is mostly intact; there is a split in the shrink wrap at the mouth that measures about 2″ (5 cm).  This was secured with tape by a previous owner; the tape has yellowed with age.

The cover is M- with no splits; there is a tiny dent in the upper left hand corner.

There is a small hype sticker on the cover that says “Pressung Weiss – Direct Metal DMM Mastering.”

“No. 104970” is faintly embossed on the front cover.

A beautiful copy of a rare and desirable pressing of The White Album.

Background:  The Beatles, aka the “White Album”, was the ninth studio album by the Beatles (by the UK method of counting, anyway.)  Released in late 1968, the album reached #1 on the charts pretty much everywhere and is the largest-selling album in the band’s history, as a sale of a double album counts as two albums sold.

Analog Planet had this to say about this particular pressing of The White Album:

Our next contestant, the 1985 German white vinyl direct-metal-mastered/DMM reissue (1C 172-04 173/74), is one of my favorite ways to listen to the The White Album in stereo. Compared to the 1978 UK white vinyl export, it is more dynamic and has greater clarity and definition. Listening to “Birthday”, the driving bass is phenomenally deep, taut and tuneful. Ambience retrieval is exceptional, with a layered soundstage and a believable presence on even the more difficult to reproduce tracks. The subtle inner details of the guitars on “Back in the USSR” are revealed, and Ringo’s double tracked drum fills are conveyed with powerful energy on “Glass Onion”. The cymbals can sound a little splashy at times, and on some systems this pressing may not be as laid back as you might like. But I believe it’s a mastering that fits the majority of the songs on this recording. Try listening to Lennon’s “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide But Me And My Monkey”. This LP cuts through the confusion, rendering the dueling guitars brilliantly and the ringing hand-bell distinctly and realistically.

Allmusic.com gave The Beatles a 5 star review:

Each song on the sprawling double album The Beatles is an entity to itself, as the band touches on anything and everything it can. This makes for a frustratingly scattershot record or a singularly gripping musical experience, depending on your view, but what makes the so-called White Album interesting is its mess. …None of it sounds like it was meant to share album space together, but somehow The Beatles creates its own style and sound through its mess.

Beatles – Rock ‘n’ Roll Music 1976 Japan white label promotional 2 LP set complete!

beatles - rock 'n' roll music japan promo lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese white label promotional copy of the double compilation album Rock ‘n’ Roll Music by the Beatles, including the original obi, booklet, and poster.

About this copy: This copy of Rock ‘n’ Roll Music is a 1976 Japanese pressing on the Odeon label.  This album was released with different mixes in various countries; this version contains the same mixes as the original UK release.

The cover is VG++, with slight edge wear.  The obi is M-.

The 24 page lyric booklet is VG++ with a few minor wrinkles.  The poster is VG++ with slight wear at the folds, but with no rips, tears, or holes.  The original black paper inner sleeves are included.

The two white label promo discs are M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a scarce Beatles LP, as Japanese promotional pressings were quite limited.

Background: Released in 1976, Rock ‘n’ Roll Music was a double compilation album containing more rock-oriented tracks by the Beatles.

The album reached #2 on the U.S. album chart and #11 on the UK chart.  The album was the first Beatles LP with worldwide release to contain “I’m Down,” a track originally released as the B-side to the “Help” single.

Allmusic.com gave Rock ‘n’ Roll Music a 3 1/2 star review:

On toward the mid-’70s, it dawned on the powers-that-were at Capitol/EMI that millions of listeners had come of age since the breakup of the Beatles in 1970 and, thus, had never experienced the group except in a historical context….And so the company decided to try a similar repackaging/re-marketing scheme with the Beatles. And the result was Rock & Roll Music, complete with an accompanying single release of “Got to Get You into My Life.” …Even focusing on their originals, the results were impressive, with the first LP appearance of the Paul McCartney-authored Little Richard homage “I’m Down,” originally a single B-side that had also been their concert closer on the 1965 tour; “Anytime at All”; and the delightful late-era “Birthday,” which was an opposite of sorts to the darker “Helter Skelter” from the same original album. … But Rock & Roll Music did work as a marketing concept, the album rising to number two on the U.S. charts (and kept out of the top spot only by — rather fittingly — Wings at the Speed of Sound).

A nice copy of a nice Beatles set that is rarely found complete.

Background: Released in 1973, The Beatles 1962-1966 is a 2 LP compilation album by the Beatles.

The album reached #3 on both the U.S. and UK album charts.

Allmusic.com gave The Beatles 1962-1966 a 4 1/2 star review:

Assembling a compilation of the Beatles is a difficult task, not only because they had an enormous number of hits, but also because singles didn’t tell the full story; many of their album tracks were as important as the singles, if not more so. The double-album 1962-1966, commonly called The Red Album, does the job surprisingly well, hitting most of the group’s major early hits and adding important album tracks like “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,” “Drive My Car,” “Norwegian Wood,” and “In My Life.”

Released in 1973, The Beatles 1967-1970, is a 2 LP compilation album by the Beatles.

The album reached #1 on the U.S. album chart and #2 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave The Beatles 1967-1970 a 4 1/2 star review:

Picking up where 1962-1966 left off, the double-album compilation 1967-1970, commonly called The Blue Album, covers the Beatles’ later records, from Sgt. Pepper’s through Let It Be. Like The Red Album, The Blue Album …contains a mixture of hits, including singles like “Lady Madonna,” “Hey Jude,” and “Revolution” — which had originally appeared only as 45s — plus important album tracks like “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” “A Day in the Life,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and “Come Together,” as well as orphaned tracks such as the single versions of “Let It Be” and “Get Back,” which had never been on any LP before. … As a précis of the group’s final 36 months, it’s all mightily impressive, even if 1967-1970 misses several great songs. But like its predecessor, this set does capture the essence (if not the full range) of the Beatles’ later recordings.
