Frank Sinatra- Sings Days of Wine and Roses 1964 RED VINYL U.S. stereo LP

days of wine and roses u.s. red vinyl stereo lp

Offered for sale is a U.S. red vinyl stereo copy of Sings Days of Wine and Roses, Moon River and Other Academy Award Winners by Frank Sinatra.

Note: This album was not commercially released  on colored vinyl in the U.S., nor were any copies pressed on colored vinyl for promotional use.  This particular copy was likely pressed by a record company employee for their own use.  We are not aware of any other red vinyl copies of this LP; this one may be unique.

About this copy: This copy of Sings Days of Wine and Roses is a 1964 U.S. deep groove stereo pressing on the Reprise label.

The matrix numbers are:

Side one: o 30301 (1-J)  SMI
Side two: o 30302 (1-J)  SMI

This suggests that the record was pressed at Columbia Records’ Santa Maria, California pressing plant, which opened in 1964.

The cover is M- and retains most of the original shrink wrap.  There is a large piece missing on the back and very slight discoloration on the back in the lower left hand corner.

The original generic Reprise inner sleeve is included with no splits.

The red vinyl disc is VG and close to VG+ with a few light marks on each side, but no deep scratches.  It’s a fairly clean disc that has been well cared for.

A nice copy of a rare, and possibly unique, Frank Sinatra LP.

Background: Released in 1964, the awkwardly-titled Sings Days of Wine and Roses, Moon River and Other Academy Award Winners is the 33rd studio album by Frank Sinatra.

The album, consisting entirely of Academy Award-winning songs, reached #10 on the U.S. album chart.

Allmusic.com gave Sings Days of Wine and Roses, Moon River and Other Academy Award Winners a 3 star review:

Featuring a selection of Oscar-winning standards, ranging from 1934’s “The Continental” to 1962’s “Days of Wine and Roses,” Academy Award Winners is professional and stylish album, but it only yields a handful of true gems. That isn’t the fault of either Frank Sinatra or arranger/conductor Nelson Riddle. Although their performances aren’t quite as distinguished as their past collaborations, they are nevertheless highly enjoyable. Sinatra is charming and lively, even if he doesn’t demonstrate the full range of his technique on each track, while Riddle’s charts are light and entertaining.

Frank Sinatra ‎– The Hits Of Frank Sinatra 1964 red vinyl Japan LP with rare “half” obi

frank sinatra - the hits of frank sinatra red vinyl japan lp

Offered for sale is an original red vinyl copy of the 1964 Japan-only LP The Hits of Frank Sinatra, including the original “hankake” obi, also known as a “half-obi.”

About this copy: This copy of The Hits of Frank Sinatra is an original 1964 Japanese pressing on the Capitol label, pressed on “Everclean” red vinyl.

The cover is VG+ with a couple of minor creases and a couple of small foxing spots on the back.

The  obi is VG+ with some discoloration from age, but no tears.  The original “envelope-style” paper inner sleeve is missing.

This LP was issued without a lyric insert.

The red vinyl disc is VG+ with a few scuffs from the original paper inner sleeve, but no significant marks.  There are a few spindle marks on the labels.  It plays well with slight surface noise.

A nice copy of a Frank Sinatra LP that is rarely found complete.

Background: Released in 1964, The Hits of Frank Sinatra was a collection of songs from Sinatra’s Capitol years that was prepared especially for the Japanese market.

The album was only in print for a short time, and as far as we know has never been reissued.

What makes this copy very unusual is that it includes the ultra-rare “hankake obi”, also known as a “half obi” or a “three quarter obi.”

Most Japanese albums issued since the late 1950s have included an obi, or sash, a paper strip that ran vertically around the cover, offering information for the Japanese buyer that was not included on the LP cover itself.

Many buyers discarded the obi when they got home from the record store, and as a result, many albums from the 1950s through the 1970s are quite hard to find with the obi intact.

For a brief time, from late 1963 through early 1964, Toshiba Records, who pressed albums for Liberty, Capitol, Warner Brothers and a few other labels, used what is known as a “hankake obi”.  Instead of wrapping around the cover, this obi was a single strip of paper about nine inches long that simply hooked over the top of the cover via a 1/4″ fold of paper.

Usually, these were glued to the cover at the factory, but most of the time, they were quickly lost.  It is also possible that retailers removed them at the point of sale so that they could use it to order another copy from the record company.

Tracks on The Hits of Frank Sinatra are:

  • All The Way
  • Isle Of Capri
  • Around The World
  • Chicago
  • Brazil
  • I Love Paris
  • Blue Hawaii
  • September Song
  • Autumn Leaves
  • Witchcraft
  • Blue Moon
  • Sentimental Journey
  • My Blue Heaven
  • High Hopes

Frank Sinatra – Swing Easy! 1970 Japan red vinyl LP with obi

frank sinatra swing easy red vinyl japan lp

Offered for sale is a Japanese red vinyl pressing of Swing Easy/Songs for Young Lovers by Frank Sinatra, including the original obi.

Note: This album contains 16 tracks from what were originally two 10″ LPs.

About this copy: This copy of Swing Easy! is a 1970 Japanese pressing on the green Capitol label of material that was originally released in 1954.

The cover is M-.  The obi is VG++ with a couple of foxing spots.  The “hojyuhyo” (reorder tag) is still attached.

The two inserts are M-.

The red vinyl disc is M- with one or two spindle marks on the labels, but no marks on the vinyl.  Clean disc!

A nice copy of a terrific Frank Sinatra LP.

Background:  Swing Easy! was originally released in 1954 as an 8 song 10″ LP.  It was reissued the following year as a 12″ LP and that version combined the 8 songs from Swing Easy! with the 8 songs from the Songs for Young Lovers LP.

This LP is a 16 track Japanese reissue, pressed in about 1970, of the version that contains both albums.

Allmusic.com gave Swing Easy! a 4 1/2 star review:

As the title implies, the record concentrates on up-tempo swingers. Again, the songs were all standards — “Just One of Those Things,” “Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams,” “All of Me” — that benefitted from the new thematic setting, the new arrangements, and, of course, Sinatra’s increasingly playful and textured vocals. Sinatra plays around with the melodies without leaving them behind, delivering each line with precision. It ranks as one of his most jazzy performances, as well as one of his most fun and carefree records.

golden nancy sinatra japan lp

Offered for sale is a first pressing copy of the Japan-only compilation LP Golden Nancy Sinatra by Nancy Sinatra, including the original obi.

There is a 7″ EP with this same cover and title that is far more common than the LP, which rarely turns up for sale.

About this copy: This copy of Golden Nancy Sinatra is an original 1967 issue on the tri-color Reprise label, and not the more common second pressing on the two-color label.

The cover is M-, with trace edge wear at the mouth of the cover.  The obi is VG+, with a few wrinkles, but no tears.

This LP was issued without an insert, as it has a gatefold cover with four pages of lyrics and photos inside.

A nice copy of a rare Nancy Sinatra LP that is quite hard to find as a first pressing.

Background: Nancy Sinatra’s career didn’t take off in the United States until 1966, but she’d had success in Japan since her first single in 1962.

As a result, there are a number of compilation albums that have been released with her songs only in Japan.  Golden Nancy Sinatra was one of the first of those.

Tracks are:

  • Sugar Town
  • These Boots Are Made For Walkin’
  • You Only Live Twice
  • Bang Bang
  • In My Room

About this copy: This copy of Sinatra at the Sands is a 1974 pressing on the Reprise label of an album that was originally released in 1966.

The cover is VG++ with slight  corner wear.  The obi is M-.  The inserts are M-.

The discs are M- and look unplayed.  Clean discs!

A nice copy of a terrific and well-recorded live album.

Background: Released in 1966, Sinatra at the Sands was the first live album by Frank Sinatra.

The album reached #9 on the U.S. album charts.

Allmusic.com gave Sinatra at the Sands a 4 1/2 star review:

In many ways, Sinatra at the Sands is the definitive portrait of Frank Sinatra in the ’60s. Recorded in April of 1966, At the Sands is the first commercially released live Frank Sinatra album, recorded at a relaxed Las Vegas club show. For these dates at the Sands, Sinatra worked with Count Basie and his orchestra, which was conducted by Quincy Jones….Basie and the orchestra are swinging and dynamic, inspiring a textured, dramatic, and thoroughly enjoyable performance from Sinatra.

Frank Sinatra – Sinatra and Strings signed 1961 U.S. mono LP

frank sinatra - sinatra and strings u.s. mono lp

Offered for sale is an original U.S. mono pressing of Sinatra and Strings, by Frank Sinatra, with the back cover signed by the artist.

Sinatra signed “To Charles, Frank Sinatra” on the back cover in ballpoint pen.

About this copy: This copy of Sinatra and Strings is a 1962 U.S. pressing on the custom Reprise label used for Sinatra’s early releases.

This LP comes from our personal collection.  We acquired it in the mid-1980s from the estate of a former nightclub owner in Dallas, Texas.

This club frequently had popular jazz, blues and pop artists perform there, and the owner routinely had every artist sign a copy of their latest album for him.   Nearly every album in the collection was a new and virtually unplayed first pressing. We had quite a few pieces from this collection at one time, and kept a handful of titles for our own collection.

The owner’s name was Charles, and most of the autographs, including this one, were inscribed to him.

The cover is VG++ and close to M-, with slight wear near the top of the front cover and a small corner bend.  The signature is clear and legible.

The original inner sleeve is included; there are small splits on one side and the bottom.

The mono disc is M- and looks unplayed and likely is unplayed.

A beautiful copy of  a rare Frank Sinatra LP.

Background: Released in early 1962, Sinatra and Strings was the fourth album to be released by the singer on his own Reprise label.

The album reached #8 on the U.S. album chart and #6 on the UK chart.

Allmusic.com gave Sinatra and Strings a 3 1/2 star review:

Sinatra & Strings, Frank Sinatra’s first album with arranger Don Costa, is an exquisite, romantic collection of ballads and one of his most sensual records. Costa has given the songs — which consist entirely of standards — exceedingly lush, heavily orchestrated arrangements that sound like updated, contemporary versions of Axel Stordahl’s ornate charts. … Sinatra & Strings remains a definitive ballads album, complete with impassioned readings and endlessly rich, detailed arrangements.

Frank Sinatra – Sings the Select Johnny Mercer red vinyl Japan promotional LP with obi

Frank Sinatra - Sings the Select Johnny Mercer red vinyl Japan promo lp

Offered for sale is an original Japanese red vinyl promotional copy of the compilation LP Frank Sinatra Sings the Select Johnny Mercer by Frank Sinatra, including the original obi.

About this copy: This copy of Frank Sinatra Sings the Select Johnny Mercer is an original 1965 Japanese pressing on the Capitol label.

The cover is M- with trace wear on one corner.  The rare obi is M-.  This LP was issued without an insert.

The envelope-style inner sleeve is M-.

The red vinyl promo disc is M- and looks unplayed. Clean disc!

This promotional copy has printed song titles on a label that was most often used for test pressings.  The name of the artist and the title of the album are misspelled on the side two label.

A gorgeous copy of a very rare (and very good) Frank Sinatra LP and the only copy, promotional or otherwise, that we have ever seen.

Background: Released in 1963 (and 1965 in Japan) Frank Sinatra Sings the Select Johnny Mercer is a compilation album by Capitol Records that was issued after Sinatra had left the label.

The album did not chart.

Allmusic.com gave Frank Sinatra Sings the Select Johnny Mercer a 4 star review:

This isn’t a definitive collection mainly because Frank Sinatra went on to record so many more great Johnny Mercer tunes for his Reprise label. But what does make it onto this CD is top-shelf. Since Sinatra was justly renown for his sensitive way with a lyric, it makes sense to compile numbers that were by written by Mercer, his favorite lyricist. Both men excelled at throwing away jazzy, seemingly off-the-cuff lingo (“Jeepers Creepers”) or at spinning sophisticated, worldly narratives “When the World Was Young.” This may help explain why so many of these songs became the definitive versions.
