Offered for sale is a sealed copy of the limited edition Classic Records pressing of Willie Nelson’s Stardust, cut at 45 RPM and pressed on transparent Clarity Vinyl.
Willie Nelson had had a long and fairly successful career prior to the release of 1978’s Stardust, but that album brought the longtime country artist into the mainstream. Turning away from his own compositions, Nelson recorded an album of pop standards under the direction of producer Booker T. Jones and the results were amazing, both in terms of sales and sound. The album topped the country charts and made it to #30 on the Billboard pop charts. Two singles, “Georgia on My Mind” and “Blue Skies” made #1 on the country charts and two others made the top 20.
Starudst has long been an audiophile favorite and it’s easy to see why – it’s an astonishing recording, with great “you are there” presence. The album has been reissued several times as “audiophile” releases, but in our opinion, none compare to the versions released by Classic Records. Classic made an effort to get the earliest generation tapes and worked with longtime mastering engineer Bernie Grundman to get the best possible mastering. They also released a number of titles, including Stardust, at 45 RPM for optimum fidelity. Shortly before closing their doors in 2010, Classic introduced their proprietary “Clarity Vinyl,” a transparent vinyl compound that lacked the carbon coloring that the label felt adversely affected the sound of the finished product.
Classic only released a handful of titles on Clarity Vinyl before going out of business, and Stardust is one of the more difficult titles to find in that format.
About the copy offerered for sale: This copy of Stardust is a still sealed, 4 LP, 45 RPM pressing on Clarity Vinyl, released by Classic Records in 2009 or so. The wrap is complete and intact, and the records are presumably new and unplayed.
This particular copy of Stardust came directly from the personal archives of Classic Records founder Michael Hobson. It was one of five copies that Hobson set aside for his personal use. As such, the record is numbered on the back with an “MH” designation. Attached to the cover is a signed card from Hobson indicating that this particular set came from his personal archive.
A rare and terrific-sounding copy of one of the best-sounding pop albums we’ve ever heard.
