Offered for sale is a sealed stereo pressing of Alexander Nevsky, by Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony, released in 1960 on RCA records.

Lots of the stereo classical LPs issued by RCA during the label’s “golden age” from 1958-1963 draw attention from collectors, though a few albums, such as this one, tend to fall through the cracks.

Prokofieff’s Alexander Nevsky has long been regarded as a great score, but to date, no single performance of the piece seems to be regarded as definitive by classical music fans.  Still, this recording from 1960, like most of Reiner’s work with the CSO, was solidly performed and well recorded.

An excerpt of an online review:

This is one of only two orchestra/choral recordings made with Reiner and the CSO during the Living Stereo era, the other was Beethoven’s 9th and each one featured the newly formed Chicago Symphony Chorus.  RCA’s original vinyl issue was quite good for it’s time, decent quality surfaces, with convincing lively dynamics. The miking managed to capture the daunting orchestral array, the width and depth of the chorus, and a feel for the venue. Great natural presence – nothing “in your face.”

One of the problems with buying vintage Living Stereo LPs is that they tend to be noisy, even if they have been well preserved.  Part of that had to do with the records being played on older equipment with heavy tracking forces.  The other had to do with the heavy, abrasive inner sleeves that RCA tended to use at the time.  That makes finding a quiet copy of any original Living Stereo LP a problem.

That won’t be a problem here, as this copy is still sealed.

About this copy: This copy of Alexander Nevsky is an early pressing of the 1960s release, and the album is still sealed and presumably unplayed.  The weight of the album suggests that it’s certainly an original “shaded dog” pressing.  As the record is sealed, we do not know the stamper numbers or the pressing plant.

The shrink wrap is fully intact aside from a small 2″ split at the lower right edge.  There are no other rips, tears or holes in the wrap, nor are there any cuts or holes in the cover.

A gorgeous copy of a scarce Living Stereo LP.
