Joe Sample – Rainbow Seeker 1978 Mobile Fidelity LP

A Mobile Fidelity pressing of Joe Sample's 1978 LP, Rainbow Seeker

$40.00

Offered for sale is a Mobile Fidelity half speed mastered pressing of Joe Sample’s 1978 jazz LP, Rainbow Seeker.

Joe Sample took a break from the Crusaders to release this 1978 LP, which Allmusic.com described like this:

Back in 1978 when this set was recorded, fusion (the mixture of jazz improvisation with rock rhythms) was declining. Keyboardist Joe Sample, best-known for his work with the Crusaders, was in the process of being one of the founders of “contemporary jazz,” an idiom that has since solidified into smooth jazz. Sample emphasized catchy melodies, light funk rhythms, appealing chord changes and a pop sensibility. For this accessible release, Sample is joined by the late legendary guitarist Billy Rogers, bassist Pops Popwell, his old Crusaders drummer Stix Hooper, a horn section and several guest guitarists. All eight tunes (which include “Fly with the Wings of Love” and “Islands in the Rain”) are by the leader, who is heard throughout in melodic form, setting up a variety of light grooves that serve as superior background music.

Rainbow Seeker was a well-recorded album, and it was almost immediately issued as a limited-edition, half speed mastered pressing by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs.

This copy is a transitional pressing, with ABC Records logos on the cover and MCA logos on the disc.

Every title ever issued by Mobile Fidelity is collectible in its own right; their pressings from 1978 through 1989 were pressed in Japan by JVC on their proprietary Super Vinyl, an exceptionally resilient, dead-quiet vinyl compound, with later issues pressed in the U.S. by RTI on 200 gram vinyl. These records were mastered at half speed; both the tape and the cutting lathe were run at half the normal speed, allowing the cutting head to cut a more accurate groove in the acetate.  The finished product featured dead-quiet vinyl, with improved dynamics, better imaging, and tighter bass.  By their very nature, all of Mobile Fidelity’s titles were limited-edition pressings, and Rainbow Seeker was limited to an unknown quantity of numbered copies.

The copy offered for sale is in M- condition, with the cover still protected by the original thick Mobile Fidelity plastic back, complete with hype sticker.
