A copy of the very limited pressing by Classic Records of Hi Fi a La Espanola, cut at 45 RPM and pressed on 180 gram vinyl
Offered for sale is a copy of the 45 RPM Classic Records reissue of Hi-Fi a La Espanola, performed by Frederick Fennell and the Eastman-Rochester “Pops” Orchestra. This was originally issued in 1960 by Mercury Records as SR 90144.
Classic Records earned a solid reputation by reissuing long-out-of-print and highly sought out classical titles originally released by RCA in the late 1950s and early 1960s. These pressings offered great dynamics and wide, impressive soundstages. Unfortunately, they also sold in limited numbers when new and finding mint used copies has become quite difficult. Classic Records began reissuing many of these titles in the mid 1990s, first as 180 gram 33 1/3 LPs, and later as limited edition pressings cut at 45 RPM on multiple, single-sided discs for optimum sound quality. Some of these titles were pressed multiple times at different weights and types of vinyl. Later pressings note Quiex SV, Quiex SV-P, Clarity Vinyl or 200 Gram vinyl on the jackets. Earlier, 180 gram pressings omit this.
While considered to be “light pop”, Hi-Fi a La Espanola has long been regarded by audiophiles as one of the best-sounding orchestral recordings ever made. At one time, stereo copies of the original Mercury pressing were selling for as much as $2000 at auction, and the record has long been listed on the Absolute Sound’s Superdisc list.
This copy of Hi-Fi a La Espanola was released in a limited edition, 45 RPM issue, pressed on 180 gram discs for optimum sound quality. Due to a mastering problem that Classic did not notice until long after the master tapes had been returned to Mercury, the 45 RPM pressing is an abridged version of the album, containing six tracks, rather than the nine included on the original LP:
Brazilian Sleigh Bells
Intermezzo from Goyescas
The 45 pressings of this album were quite limited in production and were only in print for a short time. The label on this disc duplicates the original Mercury Living Presence label. The cover is a plain white cover with a title sticker. The records and covers are in M- condition.
A great copy of a highly sought-after audiophile LP.
